AUM’s, AU’s Project SERVE receives funding boost from Daniel Foundation of Alabama

Project SERVE sends students to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to better understand service members’ healthcare needs.
Auburn University at Montgomery/Montgomery, Ala. (January 20, 2016) — The Daniel Foundation of Alabama recently gave $40,000 to support Project SERVE, a joint program for nursing students at Auburn University at Montgomery and Auburn University.
Project SERVE (or Student’s Education Related to the Veteran Experience) provides nursing students the opportunity to travel to Walter Reed National Military Medical Hospital in Bethesda, Md., for clinical experiences with returning service members, veterans and their families. AUM and AU Schools of Nursing are the only schools in the nation selected to partner with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and a third group of students will travel to Walter Reed in March 2016.
The purpose of Project SERVE is to develop interprofessional training to better understand challenges, including traumatic brain injury, PTSD, and amputations, that returning service members and veterans face. The project also enriches nursing education, ensuring that current and future nurses are trained in the unique clinical challenges and best practices associated with caring for military service members, veterans and their families.
The nursing students, in turn, are able to disseminate the most up-to-date information to local health care providers. Practicing nurses and nursing students make a dramatic and positive impact on the long-term health of hundreds of thousands of veterans. It is imperative that nurses are trained to meet the needs of the changing landscape facing our nation as our soldiers return to their hometowns.
Jean Leuner, Dean of AUM’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences, strongly supports the experiences that nursing students gain through Project SERVE.
“We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to bring our nursing students to Walter Reed National Military Medical Hospital for an immersive clinical experience with veterans and their families in order to effectively address veteran and military families’ unique health care needs,” Leuner said. “Students refer to this experience as ‘transformative,’ and they are encouraged to share what they learn in order to promote best practices with other providers and students alike. Through this extraordinary academic practice partnership, we are focused on positively influencing patient care in Alabama and nationally.”
The Daniel Foundation of Alabama’s mission is to improve the quality of life for Alabama’s citizens, including military service members and veterans. Their generous gift will help Auburn University at Montgomery and Auburn University nursing students continue and expand Project SERVE, which in turn will provide nursing students with the education and experience necessary to deliver the best care for Alabama’s veteran population.
