AUM grad Solomon receives fellowship to expand dissertation into book

Dr. Deborah Solomon, a two-time graduate of Auburn University at Montgomery, has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) fellowship to expand her doctoral dissertation into a book.

Solomon earned a B.A. in English from AUM in 2002 and a Master of Liberal Arts in English at AUM in 2008. She went on to complete her doctoral studies at Florida State University in 2015, defending her dissertation, “Mapping the Poetics of Early Modern Garden and Lyric Traditions,” with distinction.

Solomon is one of 80 scholars awarded the NEH fellowship out of 1,251 applicants.

Her fellowship travels will take her across the U.S. and the Atlantic.

Solomon will travel to Washington D.C., to visit the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Library of Congress, and the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library; to Pasadena, Calif., to visit the Huntington Library; and to the United Kingdom to explore the British Library, the Royal Collection Trust at Buckingham Palace, and the reconstructed Elizabethan Garden at Kenilworth Castle.

Solomon’s book will be titled “The Poem and the Garden: Rival Media in Early Modern England.”
