Certificate in Teaching Writing

In-Class

Do you aspire to teach college English and need an edge on the competition for instructor positions? AUM’s Certificate in Teaching Writing provides students who possess a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree in English with the additional training and credentials needed to teach writing at post-secondary institutions. Receive training in composition pedagogy, basic writing, writing across the curriculum, and writing consultancy – and have the opportunity to put that knowledge to work in the college classroom.

The program consists of 12 hours taken from the following (all courses are three hours):

  • ENGL6060 Theories in Composition
  • ENGL6090 Writing across the Curriculum
  • ENGL6120 Writing in Material and Digital Spaces
  • ENGL6140 Multilingual Composition
  • ENGL6150 Pedagogy of Basic Writing
  • ENGL6913 Composition Teaching Practicum
  • ENGL6973 Professional Writing and Editing

Students who already possess an M.A. or Ph.D. in English may elect to take one less course from the above list, negotiable with their advisor.

This degree requires students to meet on campus. Students in these courses enroll in a program to connect in a campus setting and to collaborate using a variety of technological and educational tools. Professors play an inspirational role in building relationships among teams and individuals in this setting. The criteria for many programs can only be met with In-Class coursework. Be sure to check with your advisor to understand the best route to take.
