Museum Studies Certificate

Museum Studies Certificate

Are you majoring in art, history, anthropology, archeology, art history, natural science, english, or theatre? Have you ever wanted to work in a history, science, or art museum? A national park, historic site, gallery, auction house, library, zoo or aquarium?

If so, the Certificate in Museum Studies may be right for you.

The Museum Studies certificate program provides students with both academic training and hands-on experience in museum work. Classes focus on methods for researching items for exhibit, the history of museums, the function of museums in society, and southern history. The program culminates in an internship at one of the many museums in the Montgomery area. There, you will gain practical hands-on experience that will help you land your first museum job.

The requirements for this certificate program are:

  • Two core courses: HIST 3940/6930 Historical Methods and VISU 3600/6600 Theory and Method of Museum Studies
  • Internship: the equivalent of 140 work hours in an approved museum or institution
  • Two electives selected in consultation with the Museum Studies Certificate coordinator
