The AUM Community News Service
The AUM Community News Service facilitates partnerships between Auburn University Montgomery, local media outlets, and Central Alabama communities to increase local news coverage. Through this initiative, students gain valuable journalistic skills while producing stories for underserved communities.
Participating students complete a rigorous practicum course in journalism fundamentals including ethics, objectivity, and research. Under the guidance of an experienced news editor, students report on local issues to create print, audio, and video news pieces. Student work is edited to journalistic standards before publication by community media partners.
The program provides a platform for students to engage with local communities while developing expertise in writing, interviewing, and multimedia storytelling. At the same time, partner media outlets receive relevant, quality content to help inform their audiences.
By fostering connections between aspiring journalists, local news providers, and Central Alabama residents, the Community News Service aims to strengthen the regional journalism landscape.
The initiative is funded by a grant from the Alabama Press Association-Journalism Foundation. Media outlets interested in a publishing partnership can contact Dr. Hilary Gamble at [email protected] for more information.
The AUM Community News Service
The AUM Community News Service extends its sincere gratitude to our generous donors who make this program possible.
We are especially thankful for the support of the Alabama Press Association and its Journalism Foundation. The APA represents the interests of newspapers across Alabama and provides invaluable resources to cultivate quality journalism in our state. Their grant funding enables us to empower the next generation of local reporters.
We also appreciate the backing of the Auburn University Montgomery College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the Department of Communication and Theatre. By supporting hands-on journalism experiences for students, they help fulfill AUM’s mission to engage with and serve our community.
The commitments of our donors allow us to not only enrich student learning, but also strengthen local media and increase news coverage for underserved areas. We look forward to continuing these fruitful partnerships as we further develop the Community News Service program. If you are interested in supporting our mission of empowering student journalists and filling gaps in local news coverage, please reach out to us at [email protected] to learn more about donation opportunities. We welcome involvement from individuals, foundations, businesses, and media organizations committed to journalism education and community service. With your help, we can continue expanding our efforts to serve Central Alabama
The AUM Community News Service is thankful for the support of our current media partners who publish and distribute our students’ work and for the support of our community partners who help provide context, access, and insights for our student reporters.

We look forward to working with you to inform and engage communities across the region.
Our community partners play an essential role in realizing our mission to cover issues affecting Central Alabama residents. We are grateful for their willingness to work with aspiring journalists to highlight important local stories. If your organization or members of your community are interested in partnering with us, please reach out to Dr. Hilary Gamble at [email protected]. We welcome the opportunity to better understand community needs and focus our coverage on issues that matter most to local residents.
The AUM Community News Service aims to provide quality local journalism while also creating valuable educational experiences for students. To achieve both goals, we have established republishing policies for media outlets and other organizations using our content. These guidelines allow students to receive credit for their work and benefit from seeing it published. At the same time, they grant flexibility for partners to meet their audience’s needs. We request those republishing student articles adhere to the following:
If you have any questions or concerns regarding republication please contact our editor, Kendra Love, at [email protected].
