Auburn University at Montgomery welcomes Briddell as commencement speaker

Auburn University at Montgomery will welcome City of Montgomery Director of Public Information and External Affairs Michael Briddell as its spring 2019 commencement speaker on Saturday, May 4.

The university will celebrate the graduation of more than 400 undergraduate and graduate students during two ceremonies at the AUM Athletics Complex, located at 7031 Senators Dr. The first session, featuring graduates of the College of Business and College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, will begin at 10 a.m. The afternoon session, featuring graduates of the Colleges of Education, Nursing and Health Sciences and Sciences, will begin at 2 p.m.

Briddell, who joined the City of Montgomery in 2004, oversees media relations for the city, as well as its public library system, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, the city’s website and Capital City Connection, its cable channel. In 2010, when the Montgomery metro area tied for the nation’s highest obesity rate in a survey, Mayor Todd Strange appointed Briddell to be the community’s health and wellness “czar.”

Before joining the City of Montgomery, Briddell spent two decades in broadcast journalism. His career included a five-year stint as the 5 p.m. anchor and a reporter for Montgomery’s WSFA-TV. He developed the station’s “Education Report,” a nightly feature on education-related issues. He also worked in a variety of other broadcast markets, serving with TV stations in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma and Mississippi. Briddell graduates from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in communications media.
