2020-21 AUM Alumni Association Graduate Merit Scholarships Awarded

The Auburn University at Montgomery Alumni Association recently awarded its annual Graduate Study Merit Scholarships to ten outstanding AUM students. The scholarships require that recipients maintain a GPA of 3.4 or higher, enroll in and complete nine hours each semester and be continuously enrolled for each semester covered by the award.

The $1,000 scholarships, funded by alumni memberships, were awarded by the AUM Alumni Board of Directors to Brittany Blanden, Jeanette Byrd, Kasi Davis, Chandler DeRieux, Kyla Free, Tamaraubibibogha Gunuboh, Joseph Lumansoc, Sarah Purcell-Mills, Rachel Ragland, and Lake Romine.

  • Blanden earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 2018, and is currently pursuing a Master of Liberal Arts degree at Auburn University at Montgomery. Inspired by her favorite authors, Blanden plans to teach African American literature at the collegiate level.
  • Byrd earned a bachelor’s degree in History in 1995 from the University of Texas. She continued her education at the University of Alabama with a Master of Library and Information Studies in 1997, an educational specialist degree in 2002, as well as a bachelor of the arts degree in 2012. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at Auburn University at Montgomery. Her goal is to expand use of GIS to more end users and in data creation and maintenance.
  • Davis earned a bachelor’s degree in Media Studies from Auburn University in 2010. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Early Childhood and Elementary Education at Auburn University at Montgomery. Her dream is to foster life-long learners who have not only have a thirst for knowledge, but also a desire to treat others with kindness and respect.
  • DeRieux earned a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management in 2018 from Huntingdon College. He is currently pursuing a Master’s in Sport Management at Auburn University at Montgomery. Since he was young, DeRieux has been a student athlete year round. His goal now is to become an athletic director or general manager.
  • Free earned a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from Auburn University in 2004. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Secondary Education at Auburn University at Montgomery. As an English language arts teacher, she is passionate about her students and advocates that education is their source for empowerment, and their chance for freedom from any threat of tyranny.
  • Gunuboh earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Alabama State University in 2015. He also earned a Master of Science in Justice and Public Safety in 2017 at Auburn University at Montgomery, and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Public Administration. Gunuboh plans to further his education by earning a doctorate degree as well. His objectives are to bring desired progress and improvement to his community, and enhance his wealth of knowledge to maximize his potential impact.
  • Lumansoc earned a bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Georgia Southern University in 2009. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Applied Economics at Auburn University at Montgomery. He hopes to follow his mother’s path, and earn a doctorate degree as well. Lumansoc believes a strong leader not only instills success in others, but also fosters positive relationships with those around them.
  • Purcell-Mills earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2018, and is currently pursuing a Masters of Clinical and Mental Health Counseling at Auburn University at Montgomery. Passionate about helping adolescents suffering from mental health issues, Purcell-Mills dreams to own her own Clinical Mental Health Counseling practice.
  • Ragland earned a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology in 2017, and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Kinesiology at Auburn University at Montgomery. Her goal is to defy the odds as a woman, and work in the marketing or social media departments of Minor League baseball.
  • Romine earned a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management in 2017 from Huntingdon College, and is currently pursuing a Master of Accountancy at Auburn University at Montgomery. After completing a number of certifications, Romine’s ultimate goal is to start a tax and wealth management firm, or become a CFO for a Division I athletic program.
