What Our Students Say

Honors Freshmen Feedback

I love the program, and it’s so nice to meet the people here.

It allowed me to easily meet new people that I now call my friends, and the seminars have allowed me to think in ways I would not have imagined. One of the greatest decisions I’ve made was applying to the Honors Program.

I LOVE being surrounded by so many different people from different walks of life with different experiences.

I like how different, yet accepting everyone is in the program. We all don’t agree with everything, but people are not rude and mean to those they don’t agree with.

I really enjoy the people, both students and faculty. I’m glad I have the opportunity to learn something new from everyone. This is a great interdisciplinary learning experience.

I love the honors program and look forward to the rest of my time here at AUM!

I really appreciate the family that the UHP has provided for me during my transition into college.

I hope I am contributing and giving back to the program as much as I am receiving from the UHP. I feel like the program has really broadened my views and helped me grow as an individual and student.

Graduating Class Feedback

How has the UHP helped you to grow as a student and as a human being? In other words, how are you different today than you would have been had you never joined the UHP?

I’m a better thinker. Being in classes with students from other disciplines has given me a broader perspective on issues of all kinds.

It was easier for me to realize how expressive I am. Coming into college, I wasn’t as talkative or as willing to show emotion. Being in the UHP helped me be more comfortable with others—and with myself. I learned to be who I am. Everybody has strengths and weaknesses, and the students in the UHP have been great about accepting me for who I am.

I had to do a lot of growing up. The UHP gave me the opportunities I needed to socialize with others. It was a very open and welcoming community. It’s exposed me to lots of different cultures and views. It’s taught me to think differently about things. It’s taught me how to get more out of everything.

Hands-down, the level of introspection. The UHP gets you to think about issues; it gets you to think about ideas.

Is there anything in particular you will take away from your time in the UHP?

A sense of community—once I leave here, I should be more active in my city; the honors program has helped me to see myself as a part of a whole that’s bigger than me. I value community service in a way that I didn’t before, and I feel like I shouldn’t keep my talents to myself.

Writing my thesis was a profoundly impactful experience. I’m coming away as a much better researcher… And I know myself better; my professional goals are clearer, and I’m better prepared for life in general.

Most important is just being exposed to all the different viewpoints, and the sense of close community that created. This program is full of people that I really, genuinely care about. The different viewpoints have come together into a community that has supported me throughout my time in college.

I can’t overemphasize how great the people in this program are. This is a community that genuinely wants to help each other grow.

There’s a quote that I’ve started to live by: “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” There’s always been a part of me that wanted to try things, but the UHP pushed me to the edge of my comfort zone and got me to try things I might never have tried otherwise. Whether it’s stinky cheese or traveling the world, venturing out from the norm has become a part of who I am. That wouldn’t have happened without the UHP. (Also, I’ve become a snob about cheese.)
