How to Apply
Any student who has been admitted to AUM may apply for admission to the University Honors Program. Typically, successful applicants have an ACT score of 24 or higher or a high school GPA of at 3.5. Currently enrolled AUM students or transfer students are eligible if their college GPA is 3.4 or higher.
Applicants write two short essays and have a short interview. The admissions decision is based on all of the information we have on an applicant. A lower high school GPA, for example, doesn’t necessarily make an incoming student ineligible.
Just as important as a strong academic record, however, is a commitment to the core values of the program: critical thinking, creative thinking, leadership, teamwork, and global citizenship. Our community is about far more than what happens in the classroom. We are looking for students who are passionate about serving others, developing their leadership skills, and engaging both critically and creatively with big ideas. (A sense of adventure and a desire to have fun don’t hurt, either.)
The Honors Application Process
Apply for Admission to AUM
First, you need to apply for admission to AUM. Once you have been accepted into AUM, you will be issued a student identification number, referred to as an S-Number.
Submit Your Essay
Use your S-Number to log into the honors program application. There, you will find a list of essay prompts. Choose whichever prompt is most interesting to you, and write an essay in response to it. You will need to upload each essay as a Microsoft Word or PDF file. Bear in mind that the admissions committee is looking for evidence that you have something meaningful to offer the honors community at AUM: use the essay as an opportunity to demonstrate your creativity and your critical thinking skills, and provide some insight into your personality, your goals, and the things that make you a unique and interesting individual.
Essay #1: So far, which of your accomplishments makes you the proudest? Explain why and what motivated you to excel. (Limit your response to 500 words.)
Essay #2: Respond to one of the following prompts in no more than 750 words:
Once you submit your essay, it will be read by a team of AUM professors. They will read every application essay, score them, and make comments. Scores and comments will be forwarded to the Honors Program staff.
Peer Interview
The Honors Program staff will contact you to schedule an on-campus interview with current AUM Honors students. If you live outside the Montgomery area, don’t worry; we can arrange an interview via Zoom instead.
You will interview with Honors faculty, staff, and students. We will be looking for the same kinds of characteristics we look for in your essay: intellectual curiosity, open-mindedness, and a willingness to engage with others as a member of a diverse community.
Scholarships and Awards
This award is given each spring to a student who has demonstrated an exceptional degree of commitment to serving the UHP, Auburn University at Montgomery, and the broader community; who has demonstrated commitment to the ideals of excellence; and who has a documented record of leadership, particularly in the area of service to others.
The Deichelmann Memorial Scholarship is the most prestigious scholarship awarded by Auburn University at Montgomery. Worth a total of $44,000 over four years, candidates must be new incoming freshmen and must also apply for the University Honors Program.
This award is given each fall to all active Honors students with a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher.
