If you think you can’t afford to study abroad, just check out all the scholarship resources listed here. Most scholarships for study abroad at AUM fall into one of three categories, listed below. Also check out some additional scholarship resources.

AUM Scholarships

Faculty–Led Study Abroad Scholarship Program

Funding is available for students participating in AUM-approved and sanctioned faculty-led programs. Amount will be determined per program. Contact Study Abroad for more details at 244-3544.

Faculty–Led Study Abroad Scholarship Program

AUM students participating in AUM-approved exchange programs will have an opportunity to apply for the Study Abroad scholarship. Contact Study Abroad for more information.

Prestigious Scholarships/Fellowship

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

Amount:  Up to $5,000


NSEP David L Boren Scholarship

NSEP awards David L. Boren Scholarships to outstanding U.S. undergraduates through a competitive national merit-based process. Since 1994, NSEP has awarded approximately 2,828 Boren Scholarships.

Each Boren Scholar goes abroad to a critical country to study its language and culture. Awards are for up to one academic year. Boren Scholars demonstrate their merit for an award of up to $20,000 in part by committing to work for the U.S. Government for at least one year.


NSEP Boren Fellowship

NSEP awards Boren Fellowships to outstanding U.S. graduate students through a competitive national merit-based process. Since 1994, NSEP has awarded over 1,646 Boren Fellowships to degree-seeking masters and doctoral students. Boren Fellowships are granted to motivated individuals who develop independent overseas projects that combine language and culture study with professional practical experiences.

Awards for up to $30,000 over two years are given to applicants who demonstrate the highest intellectual and professional capacity along with a commitment to U.S. Government service for at least one year. Former Boren Scholars may compete for Boren Fellowships.


Phi Kappa Phi; Study Abroad Grant

“Every year, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi funds 50 Study Abroad Grants valued at $1,000 each. The Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad.”

National Scholarships

Foundation for Global Scholars

Scholarships for U.S. & Canadian citizens

Over 200 scholarships between $500 and $2,500 will be awarded this calendar year for U.S. and Canadian citizens to study internationally. Award amounts will vary with the average award being approximately $1,000.  All decisions regarding scholarship awards are those of the Foundation and are final.


Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)

A program of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program offers intensive summer language institutes in thirteen critical foreign languages. The selection process is administered by American Councils for International Education with awards approved by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The CLS Program is administered by American Councils and The Ohio State University/Ohio University.  http://www.clscholarship.org/
