Auburn University at Montgomery’s 2020 Homecoming Week will feature a Mardi Gras parade, a mural competition, a Masquerade Ball, an AUMazing Race and more.

Auburn University at Montgomery has been named to the newly released list of 2020-2021 Military Friendly Schools published by Victory. AUM earned “silver status,” the highest designation among the five Alabama four-year colleges and universities honored. Now in its 10th year, the Military Friendly Schools list recognizes higher education institutions for their ability to provide opportunities to veterans and their spouses.
Institutions earning the Military Friendly School designation were evaluated through publicly accessible data and submitted survey responses. More than 1,000 universities and community colleges participated in the 2020-2021 survey. The newly released list will be published in the May issue of G.I. Jobs magazine.
Before its Gulf South Conference baseball opener on Saturday, AUM Athletics took a moment to honor the man who built its program into a perennial winner.
The university dedicated Q.V. Lowe Field at the Baseball Complex in honor of the former head coach who led the program for 28 years and guided it to 1,063 wins, six conference championships and three NAIA World Series finals. “We are grateful for the contribution Coach Q.V. Lowe made to Auburn University at Montgomery athletics and the institution as a whole,” AUM Chancellor Carl A. Stockton said. “He literally built our baseball program from the ground up after arriving in 1986 and his teams were known for achieving excellence on the field and in the classroom. His track record of sustained success made him an obvious choice for induction in the 2020 Alabama Sports Hall of Fame class. There’s no better way to honor his legacy than by the Warhawks playing the rest of their home games at Q.V. Lowe Field.”
The unveiling of the field also served to highlight a variety of facility improvements, including the Jo and Ben McNeil Plaza at the main entryway, the Dr. James O. Williams Dugout and the Doane Family Dugout. Other improvements include new scoreboard pillars, a ticketing center, a concessions area and fan pavilion.
In November, AUM alum Timothy Ragland became the first African-American mayor of the City of Talladega and its youngest in more than 100 years. The past few months have been a whirlwind for Ragland, who has received congratulatory messages from presidential candidates while beginning to serve constituents.
He will visit AUM on Monday, Feb. 24, to discuss his experience of running for office and what he has learned on the journey. WAKA-TV anchor Chris Searcy, a fellow AUM graduate, will moderate the discussion, which is open to AUM students, faculty, staff and community members. The event will take place in Goodwyn Hall 109 at 6 p.m.

Filibuster, AUM’s student-run literary and arts magazine, is looking for a new Editor-in-Chief and Graphic Designer for its 2021 issue. The positions begin in the Summer 2020 term and continue into the Spring 2021 term. Students will receive a small scholarship as part of their position that begins in Fall 2020.
To apply, potential candidates will need to submit both a one-page “Letter of Intent” that describes their vision for the magazine and a one-page “Resume” that describes their qualifications for serving in the position.
Experience with Adobe In-Design is required for the Graphic Design position. Experience with this program is also preferred, but not required, for the Editor position. All candidates must be enrolled as either a full or part-time student during the year to serve in the position, and he or she must maintain a 2.0 grade point average. Applicants should also have completed ENGL1010 and ENGL1020.
Candidates can send their “Letter of Intent” and “Resume” as attached Microsoft Word documents to Filibuster’s Academic Advisor, Dr. Robert Klevay. The deadline to apply for the position is March 15th. Any questions about the position should also be directed to Dr. Klevay.
EVENTS
Theatre AUM’s production of “Gruesome Playground Injuries” by Rajiv Joseph continues through February 23. This production is directed by Professor Val Winkelman with Jacquelyn Vaughn as “Kayleen” and Josh Williams as “Doug.”
The story follows Kayleen and Doug over the course of 30 years as they are brought together through unusual circumstances. The two friends compare the scars and physical calamities that keep bringing them together.
The show runs Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 20–22 at 7:30 p.m. along with a Sunday matinee on Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission. Senior citizens and military tickets are $5. AUM students, faculty, staff, and alumni are free with AUM ID.

Higher Education Day 2020 will be held on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. in Downtown Montgomery. The parade for the event will in at the State Capitol.
SGA will have a bus of about 30-40 students leaving campus around 10 a.m. The campaign march will start at 10:30 a.m. SGA will provide a light breakfast and lunch at the event. All attendees will be back on campus before 1:30 p.m. due to athletics using the bus for an event.

As part of the AUM Lecture Series, Dr. Thomas Easley from Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies will be speaking.
Dr. Thomas Easley, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, is on a mission to increase diversity within the fields of environmental science and environmental education. Dr. Easley, known as the “hip hop forester” incorporates music, a universal language, to express his views and attract a wider crowd to explore the natural world.

Graduate students – apply for the Alumni Association scholarship today!
The AUM Alumni Association is accepting applications for its 2020-2021 Graduate Study Merit Scholarships through March 1. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be fully admitted to an AUM graduate program, must have completed at least nine hours of graduate study, and have a current GPA of 3.4 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

A completed application needs to include, among other things, two letters of support – preferably from AUM faculty or staff, a 250-word essay on career objectives, and a current resume. Applicants will be notified of their award status by mail.
