Warhawk Weekly 10–1: Student interns with Lost Colony; Sean of the South coming to AUM

For four years at AUM, senior theatre student Tony George has been training for the acting job of his dreams. His preparation paid off when he landed a summer internship with The Lost Colony, the nation’s oldest outdoor theatre.
George traveled to Greensboro, N.C., in January to audition for a national open call for actors to perform at theatre companies around the world. His audition impressed recruiters from The Lost Colony.
“Luckily, I made the call-back list,” he said. “I was asked to come read again for them and that led to me receiving a contract with The Lost Colony.”

Sean Dietrich is a columnist, and novelist, known for his commentary on life in the American South. His work has appeared in Southern Living, The Tallahassee Democrat, Good Grit, South Magazine, Alabama Living, the Birmingham News, Thom Magazine, the Mobile Press Register, and he has authored nine books.
A table will be set up for people to buy books, and Sean will be available for book signings.

More than 50 Auburn University at Montgomery students participated in service projects Friday as part of the “From Our Community to Yours” event organized by AUM Housing & Residence Life.
Students volunteered for service projects at each of the River Region Human Societies (Montgomery, Elmore, Prattville/Autauga), cleaning animal living areas, organizing donations in the Elmore County High School thrift shop and showing love to their new furry friends.

Auburn University at Montgomery’s Information Technology Services office is installing fiber cables across campus to enable 10-plus Gigabit internet speed.
A four-game winning streak has put the AUM men’s soccer team in prime poll position. For the first time as members of NCAA Division II, the Warhawks are ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Association (USCA) South Regional poll. AUM, who travel to face Gulf South Conference opponent Spring Hill College on Friday, are ranked No. 8.

AUM’s Department of Athletics seeks nominations for its Hall of Fame class for 2019.
The Hall of Fame is open to former student-athletes, coaches and other individuals who have made significant contributions to the success of AUM Athletics. The nomination deadline is Friday, Oct. 4. Nominations may be submitted by completing an online form. Contact Assistant Director of Athletics for External Relations Tim Lutz will questions.

First Half Term Curtiss Course Critiques will be open through Sun., Oct. 6.
Enter the AUM Department of Communication and Theatre’s “I am a Journalist Writing Contest” to exercise your right to free speech. The competition is a great opportunity for students to learn and gain a deeper understanding of their rights under the First Amendment.
As part of the contest, students must submit a minimum 350-word personal essay on one of three topics: 1) Opinion or experience involving the First Amendment, 2) One positive change to AUM and why it was successful, or 3) One negative change to AUM and why it should be changed or removed. Submissions may include a maximum of two images. The deadline for submissions is Oct. 11, 2019. Three winning submissions will be published in AUM’s student newspaper AUMnibus and receive a gift card prize.
The “I am a Journalist Writing Content” is sponsored in cooperation with AUMnibus and students in Dr. Eunyoung Kim’s COMM 3800 Public Relations I course to promote the First Amendment. Students developed the contest from a class assignment about Middle Tennessee State University’s “1 for All” campaign, a “national nonpartisan and nonprofit educational effort to build understanding and respect for the five freedoms of the First Amendment.”

First, second and third place winners in the writing competition will be recognized at an award luncheon Oct. 30 in Taylor Center Room 222.

Flu season will be here soon. Fortunately, you can prepare your defense by visiting Student Health Services.
A limited number of flu vaccines are currently available for Auburn University at Montgomery students, employees and dependents in Student Health Services. Staff members will administer them each week day from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments aren’t necessary, and there is no copay for BlueCross and BlueShield cardholders. For others, the cost is $25.
