Centered around the theme of the South, the AUM Liberal Arts Conference (AUMLAC) combines presentation of traditional academic papers from scholars throughout the region with a range of stimulating events showcasing the liberal arts.

Registrants to the conference will be able to enjoy over twenty peer-reviewed panels on the topic of the South over two days, spanning the fields of anthropology, geography, art history, American history, American literature and theater, music history, communication studies, mass communication, and sociology. Proposals for panels and papers of 250 words in length are being accepted until October 15, 2011, with notice of acceptance by November 15, 2011. Proposals will be refereed by distinguished scholars in each discipline.

Southern Culture: AUMLAC 2012 also will host a distinguished plenary speaker, a reading session of poetry and prose from local writers, musical entertainment, and a gallery exhibition. Please check back to this site for more information.

Introducing Micki McElya, Plenary Speaker

Presentation: “Loving The Help: Popular Fictions of Southern History”

A member of the history faculty at the University of Connecticut (previously of the University of Alabama) Micki McElya is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College and New York University. Her book, Clinging to Mammy, won a 2007 Outstanding Book Award from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights. She was named a “Top Young Historian” by the History News Network in 2008.

Invited Artist Zdenko Krtic

Working with large-scale encaustic and mixed media paintings, Zdenko Krtic’s art is “a complex sedimentation of images, experiences, thoughts, and responses.” Winner of exhibition awards from around the U.S., he will host a two-day workshop as part of the Liberal Arts conference as well as hold a public talk about his work in conjunction with a month-long exhibition at AUM. Location 

The conference will be held primarily at AUM’s Goodwyn Hall. The University is located on the thriving east side of Montgomery close to the Taylor Road exit of I-85 and is about fifteen minutes from the historic downtown, site of the landmark state capitol, the Maya Lin Civil Rights Memorial and the Southern Poverty Law Center, the first White House of the Confederacy, Dexter Avenue Church, and the Hank Williams Museum. The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, which has an excellent collection of American art, Southern art, and Folk art, is five minutes from AUM.

Lodging

Discounted hotel accommodations of $59.99 per night for February 10 and 11 are available through the nearby Country Inns & Suites on Chantilly Parkway. Please mention AUMLAC while making reservations to receive the discounted rate.

Transportation

Rental cars are available at reasonable rates at the Montgomery Airport. A Conference shuttle bus will run between campus and the hotel in the morning and afternoon during the event.
