Service Learning
Service Learning volunteers

For two years, my students have been partnering with the Girl Scouts and the Alabama Council on Economic Education to help 6th-12th grade girls earn their "Dollars and Sense" badge. Financial Literacy is one of the program areas now emphasized by the Girl Scouts. The badge includes learning about exchange rates, plus learning about credit cards and the stock market.

Older students have often been involved with service learning through reading stories to younger children. The lesson on "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" is a good one for blending reading and Economics. The "Candy Game" is another great choice for service learning, whether you use the version with candy or not.
