Dr. Mark Benson has been an AUM faculty member since 1988. He has published articles on the music of such diverse figures as 16th-century madrigalist Carlo Gesualdo, and 20th-century composer Arnold Schoenberg. At AUM, Dr. Benson teaches most of the music classes, and serves as academic advisor for the pre-architecture program. He also coordinates the Promenade Concerts at AUM. Dr. Benson is principal percussionist of the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, and he performs often with other organizations in the Montgomery area. He writes the program notes for the Montgomery Chamber Music Organization, the Montgomery Symphony, and the Montgomery Chorale, and is a frequent guest on the Montgomery Symphony Radio Program. His article on Montgomery, Alabama, will appear in the second edition of the New Grove Dictionary of American Music in 2013. Dr. Benson was born in Western New York, and is a long-suffering fan of the Buffalo Bills.
