| Biography James Nathan is Khalid bin Sultan Eminent Scholar, Auburn University at Montgomery. He is a former Foreign Service officer and the author of seven books and more than 80 academic articles. He has written over one hundred articles for the New York Times, Washington Post, The LA Times, The Nation, Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, The Washington Times, USA Today, the Huffington Post, and other popular publications. Dr. Nathan has also held senior posts at the Naval War College, Army War College, the University of Delaware and Johns Hopkins. He recently was Senior Distinguished Fulbright Professor in Beijing at China's most senior diplomatic institution (The Foreign Affairs University of China), and SyCip Distinguished Fulbright Professor in Manila. He has been a senior Distinguished Fulbright Professor in Australia and a Fulbright Alumni Fellow in Beijing, and program director of the State Department's Asian leadership course in Hong Kong.
Dr. Nathan's latest book, Soldiers, Statecraft and History won the "Choice" award for the best academic book on international policy in 2003. His texts and scholarly works are widely used in graduate and undergraduate courses across America. One work, U.S. Foreign Policy and World Order, was cited by Foreign Affairs as the best book on U.S. foreign policy since World War II. Another recent book, Anatomy of the Cuban Missile Crisis, was termed "mandatory reading for policy makers" by the Washington Post. Dr. Nathan's book on U.S. naval policy won the Furness award for the best book on military strategy. Dr. Nathan teaches graduate courses in political science and international policy at AUM. His students are largely associated with the American and overseas military programs. Dr. Nathan is a former NATO fellow, a National Science Foundation Fellow, National Academy of Sciences Fellow, and a Spencer Foundation Fellow. He also is a frequent participant in "track 2" diplomatic undertakings, including missions to North Korea, Iran, Morocco, Turkey, and elsewhere. He is the founding executive director of the Alabama World Affairs Council, a board member of the World Affairs Councils of America, and a “life member" of the Council on Foreign Relations. He has lectured world-wide to civilian, military, and intelligence audiences under the auspices of the Department of State, the Fulbright program, and host governments in dozens of countries on every continent except Antarctica. Dr. Nathan's diplomatic career began in Latin America, and later took him to Europe and Asia. His specialization and training was political/military affairs. Publications: Seven books on international affairs and U.S. foreign policy (Johns Hopkins University Press; Little, Brown; Indiana University Press; and Harper Collins). U.S. Foreign Policy and World Order cited by Foreign Affairs as the "finest book available on U.S. foreign policy since World War II." Book on The Cuban Missile Crisis cited by the Washington Post as "mandatory reading for policymakers at all levels." Book on U.S. naval strategy awarded the Furness Prize for the Best Book on military affairs.
