Her areas of interests includes medical sociology, marriage and family, and deviance. Dr. Yarber is currently working on the development of a Court Watch Program in Alabama. The Alabama Court Watch Program is a program that would place citizen activists in rural courtrooms across Alabama for the purpose of documenting how those accused of non-violent drug offenses and other defendants whose crimes are considered drug related are treated; that is, how their sentences compare based on their race and socio-economic standing as well as whether or not they have a court appointed or privately hired attorney. In addition, the program will determine which judges are implementing the voluntary sentencing guidelines passed into law in Alabama in 2006 and which ones are still sending non-violent drug offenders to Alabama s dangerously overcrowded prisons despite having other sentencing options available.
