Wallace Community College Selma, Auburn University at Montgomery sign transfer agreement

Collaborative articulation agreement provides help, structure for community college students at WCCS to navigate transfer, transition to four-year degrees.

The heads of Auburn University at Montgomery and Wallace Community College Selma on May 25 signed an official articulation agreement between the two institutions that provides a pathway and support for WCCS students to navigate the transfer process and transition to four-year degrees at AUM.

Under the agreement, AUM faculty and advisors will be able to connect to WCCS student advisors for the benefit of students. AUM faculty also will guest lecture at WCCS.

WCCS students transferring to AUM will also be eligible for scholarships.

“This agreement provides greater access and opportunity for our students to continue their educational goals. We are very honored to be a partner with AUM, as they are an outstanding university,” said Dr. James M. Mitchell, WCCS president.

Lula Snowden, who transferred to AUM from WCCS, said starting at a community college before moving on to a four-year institution was exactly what she needed. “When I graduated high school, I was not prepared financially or emotionally to go right to a big university,” she said. Starting at WCCS allowed her to get on her feet academically and start her career and then complete her bachelor’s degree at AUM. Snowden is now the director of Adult Education at WCCS.

Today’s agreement will allow other WCCS students to follow in Snowden’s footsteps with additional support from both institutions. Both AUM and WCCS say the agreement embodies the connections and a commitment to community and support for the student. The aim is to ensure that when WCCS students transfer, they will already be familiar with people and places at AUM, allowing them to smoothly move forward.

“Auburn Montgomery is pleased to have Wallace Community College Selma as a partner. WCCS plays a vital role in the communities it serves, preparing students to enter growing and emerging career fields,” said AUM Chancellor Dr. John Veres. “This agreement will help build a more robust staging ground at WCCS for students to start their bachelor’s degree while they’re earning their associate degree."

The agreement includes transfer scholarships from AUM to WCCS students. Top recipients will be chosen by WCCS.

Additionally, the agreement includes reverse transfer, which allows students to complete their associate degree and start building their careers while they earn their bachelor’s degree.
