New residence, Warhawk Hall, filling up for fall

Construction of the new AUM residence hall, Warhawk Hall, is on schedule and a grand opening celebration has been set for the first day of the fall semester, Aug. 12, at 12:30 p.m.

With the university’s existing residence halls – The Commons and The Courtyards – at capacity for two years, the Auburn Board of Trustees approved construction of the new facility in spring 2012 to provide much-needed housing for the growing campus.

The new five-story, 144,740-square-foot building is located on the east side of campus next to the Wellness Center. It was designed by Williams Blackstock Architects and is being constructed by B.L. Harbert International. The cost of construction is paid for by residents and the sale of university bonds, not tuition and fees.

The design includes 148 suites divided into a variety of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. Student common areas are distributed throughout the building with lounge and study spaces on each floor. A smaller, two-story commons wing is located at the southeastern end of the building and will include classrooms, conference space, recreation rooms, Residence Life offices, and a student lounge. To accommodate the extra parking the new residents will need, The Commons parking lot is being expanded.

Occupancy for Warhawk Hall is quickly filling up, with currently only 33 out of 350 spaces still available for fall. Daryl Morris, director of housing, said the new residence hall has been a big hit among freshmen and their parents.

“I have had parents tell me that this has made the difference between their student living on or off campus,” Morris said.
