New dean of student affairs, diversity and inclusion to join Auburn University at Montgomery from Lipscomb University

Josh M. Roberts, dean of student development at Lipscomb University, has been named the new dean of student affairs, diversity and inclusion of Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM).

His appointment will begin November 4.

“I’m energized to start at AUM,” Roberts said. “The heartbeat of any university is the student body, and AUM's student body is poised for greatness. I’m eager to champion the ideas and initiatives at AUM that will help students reach their full potential.”

Auburn University at Montgomery Chancellor Carl A. Stockton said Roberts’ breadth of experience helped differentiate him from other candidates in the search process.

“We are excited to welcome Dean Roberts to the Auburn University at Montgomery family,” Stockton said. “We pride ourselves on offering a student-centered experience and valuing diversity of people and perspective. Dean Roberts’ passion for serving students is evident, and his previous experience makes him a natural fit for this position. During his career, he has been actively engaged with intercultural development, student government, university counseling, leadership development programs and so many other units and resources that serve students.”

During his visit to AUM, Roberts said he was impressed with the university’s “both challenging and nurturing” campus culture.

“AUM students have the opportunity to not just be great entrepreneurs and health care professionals and educators and scientists, but to also be deeply involved in their community,” he said. “AUM’s leadership is passionate about building an AUM that provides a home for students and a place where every student feels a sense of ownership in the campus, a pride in the community, and an enduring commitment to the entire AUM family.”

In his current role at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., Roberts’ duties include overseeing the university’s Career Development Center, Veteran’s Services Office, Student Activities Center, campus recreation programming, Student Government Association, and student organizations. He also manages student leadership development and student philanthropy and serves as an adjunct professor of history, politics and philosophy.

“From the time a student enrolls until graduation, their journey at Auburn University at Montgomery will be significantly shaped by the resources and programming offered by our Student Affairs office,” said Sameer Pande, associate provost for enrollment management and student affairs at AUM. "Dean Roberts will play a critical role in ensuring that AUM prepares students who are innovative, ethical leaders who are positioned to make a difference locally, nationally and globally.”

At Lipscomb University, Roberts said he has worked to foster a student environment of communication, collaboration and innovation.

“I believe in partnering with students to make sure that the university grows in the ways that actually matter to the student experience,” he said. “At AUM, I want every student to know that their perspective matters and is important to the university. Students deserve to know that their perspective had a meaningful influence on the decision-making process.”

Prior to Lipscomb University, Roberts served as director of admissions at Faulkner University in Montgomery and as an associate attorney at Waldrop & Hall, P.A. in Jackson, Tenn. He also served as an administrative intern for the office of former senator William Frist (R-Tenn.), and a legislative intern for the office of former senator Tim Hutchinson (R-Ark.).

Roberts earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from George Washington University and juris doctorate degree from the University of Memphis.

Roberts will be joined in Montgomery by his wife, Cristen, and five children: Graydon, Ensley, Blythe, Lawson, and Webb. He enjoys kayaking, hiking, and is an avid reader of maritime history.
