Dr. Carl A. Stockton became the sixth Chancellor of Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) in July 2016 at the invitation of the Auburn University Board of Trustees.
Under his leadership, AUM has earned recognition from U.S. News & World Report and Princeton Review for the quality of its academic programs and has been designated as a Military Friendly School by Victory Media. In U.S. News & World Report’s 2020 Best Colleges guide, AUM ranked 33rd among regional public universities in the South for overall quality and earned a No. 88 national ranking for the quality of its “First-Year Experience” (seminars and programs that bring new students into regular contact with faculty and staff in support of student success). In July 2019, Auburn University at Montgomery’s athletics program earned full-fledged NCAA Division II membership.
AUM has also been selected as the top university in the River Region by voters in the Montgomery Advertiser’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards for two consecutive years.
In fall 2018, AUM’s accreditation was reaffirmed for 10 years with zero recommendations by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
AUM was the first university to join the Montgomery Internet Exchange in 2017, and has also formed new partnerships with Alabama community colleges. During Dr. Stockton’s tenure, the university’s enrollment has grown to its highest total in the last six years as the student population has exceeded 5,200 in fall 2018 and 2019.
In his 37 years in higher education, as both an administrator and faculty member, Dr. Stockton has raised more than $100 million in grants and capital support for the universities and programs he has served. His leadership and support have increased degree offerings for students and research and professional development opportunities for faculty while also yielding partnerships with industry and international universities.
