Summer Language and
Culture Institute
Auburn University at Montgomery is pleased to announce the first Summer Language and Culture Institute, which will be held on the campus from July 19 to August 7, 2012.
The Summer Institute will introduce international students to American language and culture.
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at Auburn University at Montgomery provides exemplary English language training, using qualified ESL teachers in courses specifically designed to better help students to improve their English language skills and to enable them to succeed in their academic, professional, and personal lives. Therefore, the curriculum in the ESL is based on (1) Academic English, (2) Communicative English, and (3) Acculturation.
The academic English curriculum is taught via the Academic Word List, utilizing academic textbooks and designing course syllabi and assignments that align with established academic requirements.
The communicative approach helps students more effectively comprehend and communicate in English. The instruction focuses on both fluency and accuracy in language learning.
Acculturation contributes immeasurably to the above elements as it provides and builds an indispensable cultural context for reinforcing classroom learning. Thus, part of our curriculum introduces American culture to our students. And extracurricular activities such as social gatherings and local and regional trips will reinforce and enrich students’ overall learning experience.
