New Scholarship for AUM College of Business Students

Auburn University at Montgomery alumni Adam and Paige Finesilver establish scholarship for students enrolled in the Auburn University at Montgomery College of Business.

Auburn Montgomery/Montgomery, Ala. (Feb. 27, 2018) — Adam Finesilver and his wife Paige Finesilver, both members of the Auburn University at Montgomery Class of 2006, have established an annual scholarship for students enrolled in the Auburn University at Montgomery College of Business.  The scholarship is named the Susan K. Finesilver and Michael D. Garoutte Annual Scholarship in honor of his parents’ memory.

Susan K. Finesilver was born on May 20th, 1949 in Detroit, Michigan.  Susan was an intelligent and successful business woman.  She owned and operated several trucking companies in the Chicago land area with Michael D. Garoutte, her loving partner.   While she worked countless hours managing her companies with Michael, her true passions laid with her two sons.   One could always find her at their baseball games, helping them with their homework, and supporting their dreams.  Her sacrifices made possible the lives they live today.  Sadly, Susan passed away on July 30th, 1998 from a very aggressive form of cancer, but her memory and sacrifices will never be forgotten.

Michael D. Garoutte was born on Jan 30th, 1941 in Texarkana, Arkansas.  He was an amazing man who sacrificed all that he could for his country and his family.  He was honorably discharged from the army with a rank of Major.  A few notable honors from his military service was the receipt of the Silver Star and Bronze Start for valor and heroic service in combat.   As with Susan, there was nothing Michael wouldn’t do for his children.   Michael passed away on March 9th, 2009 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

This scholarship is meant to recognize students who, like Adam, have lost a parent or whose parents have sacrificed for their country while in military service and would need financial assistance in pursuit of a degree that will allow them to realize their dreams, whatever they may be.

To be eligible to receive consideration for the Susan K. Finesilver and Michael D. Garoutte Annual Scholarship, a student must be admitted to Auburn University at Montgomery with a declared major in Accounting, have a 2.5 GPA, and demonstrate financial need.  Preference will be given to students who have lost a parent and/or whose parent is a veteran of the U. S. Armed Services.  Additional consideration will be given to a student who demonstrates leadership in an AUM student organization.

“It has been an honor to work with Adam on this scholarship as he seeks to help students achieve their dream of a college education” said Martie McEnerney, Senior Development Officer.

Annual Scholarship levels are established by the Auburn University Foundation.  The minimum named annual scholarship is $1,000, but the scholarship can be at any level above that.

Auburn University at Montgomery is ranked among the South’s top universities by U.S. News and World Report and is recognized one of the best colleges in the Southeast by The Princeton Review.
