AUM welcomes Air Force general as commencement speaker
AUM will welcome U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Terrence A. Adams, a 1994 graduate, as its Spring 2024 commencement speaker.
Adams serves as the Deputy Principal Cyber Advisor (DPCA) to the Secretary of Defense and Senior Military Advisor for Cyber Policy. As the DPCA, he serves as the principal advisor to the Secretary on military cyber forces and activities. He is also responsible for assessing and overseeing the implementation of the cyber strategy of the Department of Defense and execution of the cyber posture review of the department on behalf of the Secretary.
Adams earned a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems from AUM.
AUM’s Spring Commencement ceremonies will be held on Saturday, May 4, in the AUM Athletics Complex. Graduates of the University College and Colleges of Business and Liberal Arts & Social Sciences will be recognized at 10 a.m. The Colleges of Education, Nursing & Health Sciences, and Sciences will celebrate their graduates at 2 p.m.
A native or Tuskegee, Adams enlisted in the Army as a private (E-1) after high school. After serving in the Army for six years, he entered the Air Force through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Alabama State University (Detachment 019) after graduating from AUM.
He commanded six times at the squadron, group, and wing levels, including three commands while deployed. Most recently, he served as Commander 628th Air Base Wing, and Commander of Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina. Adams deployed to Seeb Air Base, Oman, Kirkuk AB, Iraq, Ali AB, Iraq, and Al Udeid AB, Qatar in support of operations Southern Watch, Iraq Freedom, Enduring Freedom, New Dawn, and Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa. He has held a variety of positions at squadron, group, wing, major command, air staff and joint levels.
Before his current position, the general was the Director of Cyberspace Operations and Warfighter Communications for the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Cyber Effects Operations at the Pentagon.

SGA introduces 2024-2025 officers
AUM’s Student Government Association recently introduced new officers for the 2024-2025 academic year. The new slate of officers includes President: Emma Jankowski, Vice President Nathan Lochte, Treasurer Sydney Tait, Secretary Amber Mann, Parliamentarian Jalen Bradley and Sergeant-at-Arms Jackson Baker.

Baseball team pushes into national Top 25
A doubleheader sweep and series win last weekend against West Florida has propelled AUM’s baseball team into the national Top 25 and the top five of a regional poll.
AUM enters today’s 3 p.m. home game against Albany State with a No. 21 ranking in the ABCA National Coaches Poll and a No. 4 ranking in the NCBWA South Region Poll.
The baseball team and No. 16 softball will each open three-game series at Montevallo Friday at 5 p.m.
AUM’s 8th-ranked women’s tennis team and 24th-ranked men’s team will each open Gulf South Conference tournament play on Saturday, April 27.

AUM’s 4th Annual Celebration of Research & Creative Activity offers undergraduate students a platform for sharing their scholarly interests with the campus community at-large.

Fine Arts offers summer workshops for high school students
A grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts has enabled AUM’s Department of Fine Arts to run three free summer workshops for high school students. Each camp is limited to 20 high school students.
The schedule includes:
- Digital Illustration: June 3-7
- Audio/Visual Storytelling: June 10-14
- Photography & Botany: July 22-26

AUM will seek to hold its status as the River Region’s favorite university in the Montgomery Advertiser’s 2024 Best of the River Region Community Choice Awards.
AUM has earned nominations in three categories: Best College/University, Best Place to Work and Best Hearing Aid/Hearing Specialist Center.
Cast your online vote in multiple categories through April 29. Winners and finalists in each category will be revealed in July.
Keeping our campus beautiful
AUM’s Rural History & Ecology Research Institute (RHERI) is hosting a volunteer workday on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to noon, to remove invasive plants from the AUM forest and trail areas. Volunteers are asked to meet at the bridge leading to the forest at 9 a.m.
Bring water, closed-toe shoes, and any other supplies you might need for work in the woods. Long pants and sleeves are highly recommended.
Earn a scholarship as an AUM cheerleader
If you are athletic and can inspire a crowd, you might have the ingredients to become a member of the AUM Cheerleading team. The team is seeking talented, athletic and spirited candidates for the upcoming academic year.
Tryouts take place April 26-28. Scholarships are available for incoming and currently enrolled AUM students. Requirements include learning cheers and dances taught at tryout clinics, advanced-level stunt capabilities (twisting and release), acceptance into AUM and a minimum GPA of 2.5.
Incoming freshman scholarships start at $1,000 per year, and there are scholarships for advanced level tumbling ($500/year for Level 4 and up), Level 2 and 3 tumbling ($250/year) and academic achievement ($250/year for a 3.75 GPA or higher).
