Writing is a Process

The Composition Program Mission

The Composition Program believes that writing is a process and a social act that enables students to produce writing for academic, professional, and civic purposes. Our goal is to create a culture of inclusiveness that respects diversity of people, languages, and perspectives. The composition courses emphasize critical thinking, rhetorical awareness, multiple literacies, reflective writing, collaboration, and research-based argument as a vehicle of academic growth and life-long learning beyond the first-year composition courses.

English Composition

The Program Offers Three First-year Writing Courses

ENGL 1010 English Composition

(3 Credits)
Prerequisite: adequate performance on departmental tests, ACT English score of 18, or passing ENGL 0103

ENGL 1010 is a first-year writing course focused on introducing students to the concepts and practices of rhetoric and composition. The course prepares students to compose texts in a variety of genres for various purposes, audiences, and contexts, including digital environments. The course emphasizes analytical and critical skills: rhetorical analysis, critical thinking, argument, and reflection. Students use writing processes to draft, peer review, revise, edit, and reflect on their work. The course assignments and projects prepare students for varied writing contexts at the university and in their future professional career.

ENGL C1011 English Composition I Lab

(1-credit Hour Lab)

A Writing Studio extension of the English 1010 course, designed specifically for students who do not meet testing or GPA prerequisites for ENGL 1010. A writing studio is designed to provide guided practice and support as you learn, write, and revise. Writing is hard work and takes time, especially when learning to write in new ways. In our writing studio, you’ll have time to deepen your understanding of and further develop the strategies introduced as part of your writing projects from ENGL C1010. Designed to be a workshop classroom where both conversation and writing happen, English 1011 provides students with opportunities to engage with reading and writing strategies in conjunction with their ENGL C1010 course.

ENGL 1020 English Composition II

(3 Credits)
Prerequisite: ENGL 1010, with a minimum grade of C.

ENGL 1020 is a writing course that focuses on developing academic research writing skills that students will utilize in their academic and professional contexts. The course introduces students to the methods, strategies, and skills required to conduct an informed inquiry: critical reading, critical analysis, synthesis, constructing a research-based argument, and reflection. Students also learn how to evaluate academic and non-academic sources and proper citation and documentation of sources. The course also focuses on improving oral communication skills to prepare students to share their research with various audiences.
