Grab your paddles and head to the annual Dragon Boat races on Aug. 23

DragonBoatRace2012_blastAuburn Montgomery is once again a proud sponsor of the annual Dragon Boat Races on the Alabama River, and all of the Warhawk Nation is invited to come out and enjoy a day on the river and cheer AUM teams to victory. This year's teams are manned by the Confucius Institute and Outreach. The event begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Riverfront Park downtown, with Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange's opening remarks, followed by AUM students performing the "Dragon Dance." This is the fifth year the Dragon Boats have raced in Montgomery, and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever. Employees invited to Staff Council gathering on Tuesday

The AUM Staff Council’s first Get-Together/Meeting of the 2014-15 year will be on Tuesday from 2 to 3 p.m. in the West Room on the 10th floor of Young Tower. Chancellor John Veres will be the guest of honor to help open the new academic year, and the new Steering Committee and Unit Representatives will be introduced. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Alabama Power Foundation awards grant to help AUM plant more trees

AlaPowDonationStudAffairs_blastAUM's sustainability efforts, led by Dr. Nichole Thompson, received a boost recently in the form of a grant to provide service learning projects that connect students to the environment through the planting of trees. It's the second year in a row AUM Sustainability has been awarded this grant. In an effort to promote sustainable projects across the state of Alabama, the Alabama Power Foundation's Good Roots grant program, in partnership with the Alabama Urban Forestry Association, provides $1,000 per grant to purchase trees for planting. Thank you to Alabama Power for helping AUM continue to be a Tree Campus USA.

Lovrich returns to AUM to lead Warhawks baseball

MartyLovrichQVLowe_blastAfter spending two seasons as the head baseball coach at Southern Polytechnic State University, former Warhawks' longtime assistant coach Marty Lovrich has been named the new head coach at AUM. Lovrich will take over for the only head coach in the program's history, Q.V. Lowe, who will officially retire on July 31. Read more at

AUM forms partnership with Southern Union State Community College

Dr. Gokhan Alkanat
Dr. Gokhan Alkanat, Senior Program Manager of the English as a Second Language Program, has been tapped to fill the position of Assistant Provost for Global Initiatives, effective Aug. 1. Alkanat will oversee the Office of Global Initiatives and will lead AUM's international efforts, including recruiting international students, developing and monitoring student exchange programs, overseeing faculty-led study abroad programs, and advising current international students.
