Honors continue to roll in for national champion Warhawks


SSACChrisCassie_blastThe Southern States Athletic Conference announced its final individual awards for the 2013-14 year recently, naming its Male and Female Players and Coaches of the Year. The SSAC Female Player of the Year is junior Warhawks pitcher Cassie Daniels from Auburn Montgomery, while Warhawks head softball coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson was selected the Female Coach of the Year. AUM Sports Information honored in NAIA-SIDA publication and media contests

NAIASIDA_blastThe Auburn Montgomery sports information staff was recognized with 13 top-10 finishes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Sports Information Directors Association (NAIA-SIDA) Publication and Media Contest at the annual convention at the World Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla. The contest is broken into five sub-categories, which include the Walt Alexander Publications Contest, the Dr. W. Jack Bell Writing Contest, a promotional materials contest, a digital media contest, and a video contest. Those five sub-categories produce a total of 20 awards, with the top 10 in each category being honored. The pieces were judged against fellow NAIA member institutions and were voted on by a panel designated by the contest coordinator. Read more at aumathletics.com

Staff Council hosting parking recommendation Q&A on Tuesday

The Staff Council will host a question-and-answer session on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the West Room on the 10th floor of Young Tower regarding recommendations made by the AUM Parking Committee to institute mandatory registered parking for students and employees. If approved, mandatory registration would go into effect fall 2015, and an annual parking registration fee of $35 would be charged. Read the Parking Committee recommendation

Sciences hosting FIESTA to support teaching and research in the school

The School of Sciences will hold a FIESTA fundraising event at Chipotle’s Mexican Grill located in Eastchase on Thursday, June 19. The goal is to raise money to support teaching, research, and service activities within the School of Sciences. When you go to Chipotle’s, mention AUM School of Sciences before you place your order. Chipotle’s will give 50 percent of the proceeds from any food or beverages purchased between 4 and 7 p.m. This includes “to-go” orders. This offer does not apply at the Prattville Chipotle’s. Watch the U.S. battle Germany in World Cup action at viewing party on June 26

Former Georgia P.E. teacher of the year brings expertise to physical education and health workshop on June 27

The School of Education, the Alabama Department of Public Health, and the Alabama State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance are teaming up to host the 2014 Physical Education, After-School Program, and Health Workshop featuring J.D. Hughes, 2004-05 Georgia Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year and author of No Standing Around in My Gym. The workshop will be on Friday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Wellness Center. Topics will include:
  • Jump ropes
  • Resources for teachers and schools
  • School food guidelines
  • Physical activity for after-school programs
  • Physical education for large groups
  • High school activities
  • Adapted physical education - and more!

National champs pay it forward

SoftballCamp2014_blastScottie Wilkes, AUM’s assistant softball coach, instructs Future Warhawks on base running during Summer Softball Camp last week on the AUM softball field (see image to left). The newly crowned NAIA Softball National Champions teach softball skills to local girls, ages 6 and up, each summer. Campers work on basics like hitting, fielding, base running and game situations. Human Resources to recognize employees with AUM Core Value Award

The Auburn Montgomery Core Values identify seven focus areas for employees to strengthen and create AUM’s unique identity. Faculty staff actively participate in opportunities throughout the year that contribute to the overall mission of AUM. Human Resources wants to recognize those efforts. If you know of an employee who consistently demonstrates these values, submit a nomination form today. Warhawks place nation-best seven players on NFCA All-Region softball team


NFCAAllRegion_blastThe national champion Warhawks softball team recently landed a nation-best seven players on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s NAIA All-East Region team. Receiving first-team honors were pitchers Cassie Daniels and Taylor Powell, catcher Lauren Shaw, designated player Kayla Hale and third baseman Katie Spain. Outfielders Therese Byrne and Amie Kelly garnered second-team accolades. Read more at aumathletics.com

Buffy Lockette, Manager of External Communications in University Relations, has been awarded Accreditation in Public Relations. Administered by the Universal Accreditation Board, a consortium of nine professional communication organizations, the accreditation program aims to improve the practice of public relations by assessing competence in 60 areas of knowledge, skills and abilities associated with the profession. The program is designed for PR professionals with at least five years of experience in public relations. Candidates must successfully complete the rigorous process, including oral and written examinations, to be granted accreditation. “Earning APR reflects a mastery of the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to succeed in our increasingly complex profession,” said Susan G. Barnes, APR, 2013 chair of the Universal Accreditation Board. “Practitioners who achieve the designation are demonstrating their commitment not only to our profession, but also to a strong code of ethics and to the betterment of their organizations and clients.”

Frank Williams
Frank Williams, photographic specialist in University Relations, earned 3rd place in the "News: Spot and Feature" category of the University Photographers' Association of America Monthly Image Competition for the month of February. The honored image is "Posthumous Degree," an image Williams captured of a grieving mother receiving her deceased son's college diploma. Williams also garnered honorable mention for the image "Big Grins for the Tortoise."

Williford

 
Dr. Hank Williford, Head of the Department of Kinesiology, was selected recently to be a member of the Samford University Dietetic Advisory Board. He also was reappointed by the governor to the Governor’s Commission on Physical Fitness and was elected to chair the Community Health Committee for the Alabama Obesity Task Force. Williford recently gave the keynote address for the Alabama Senior Olympics.
