Warhawks capture AUM's first softball national championship


SoftballNationalChampionsKayla Hale hit a pair of home runs and Taylor Powell tossed 6 2/3 effective innings in her first appearance of the tournament, as the Auburn Montgomery softball team defeated William Carey 10-6 to claim the first NAIA National Championship in the program’s six-year history Thursday. The national title marks the 23rd all-time in AUM athletics history, but the first by a team other than the men’s and women’s tennis teams. Read more at aumathletics.com

AUM welcomes LBWCC scholarship recipients

Employees - help University Relations improve internal communications

As part of its ongoing efforts to improve communication on campus, the Office of University Relations is conducting a survey of employees about internal communications systems. This survey will be active through 5 p.m. on June 12. We are exploring several ways to help us better communicate on campus, and we will use the results of this survey to enhance our efforts. Dr. Venessa Funches
 
Dr. Venessa Funches, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Associate Professor in the College of Business, has been commissioned to author a textbook chapter, which is scheduled to go to press in early 2015. The Routledge textbook The Dark Side of CRM will feature Funches’s chapter "Negative Word of Mouth, Misbehavior and Revenge." This is an area of expertise for Funches, as her dissertation focused on consumer retaliation.

Dr. John C. Havard, Assistant Professor in the Department of English and Philosophy, has had his essay "Ironizing Identity: Cosmopolitanism and Herman Melville’s ‘Benito Cereno’ as Critique of Hispanicist Exceptionalism" published in Literature Interpretation Theory, volume 25, issue 2.

Dr. Alexander L. Kaufman, Associate Professor in the Department of English and Philosophy, was invited to present the plenary address at the inaugural Brian J. Levy Lecture at the University of Hull, United Kingdom, and the micro-symposium "Outlaws and Boundaries." Kaufman's lecture "The Medieval Outlaw/ed Canon: Literary and Ideological Thresholds and Boundaries" explored the reasons why medieval outlaw literature has remained popular and also why most of the literature, especially the poems of the early Robin Hood tradition, has not achieved canonical status. The lecture was sponsored by the Andrew Marvell Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Hull.




 

OutreachHouse2House_blastFor the second year, employees of Auburn Montgomery Outreach invested volunteer hours with House-to-House, a ministry in Montgomery’s Washington Park neighborhood. They spent four hours on May 17 painting at a neighborhood home which is used as a dormitory for Common Ground summer interns. Involved in this work day were Cathy Crabtree, Jeff Blancett (and Jeff's wife and daughter), Linnea Conely, Don McCanless, Suman Majumdar, and Alan Reid. They were paired with several members of Riverside Presbyterian Church, Prattville. House-to-House purchases and renovates abandoned homes in an effort to provide better housing for neighborhood residents. They are able to do this through the help of hundreds of volunteers and several qualified investors.

Dr. Luke Smith
, Assistant Professor in the Department of Foundations, Technology, and Secondary Education, received the Excellence in Teaching Award from Sigma Alpha Pi National Society of Leadership and Success. Smith was nominated by student members of the Sigma Alpha Pi chapter at AUM as "a professor who teaches with heart and passion and has motivated them in their pursuit of education."
