Nursing students care for wounded warriors at Walter Reed

by Buffy Lockette | Mar 14, 2014

Auburn Montgomery nursing students spent their spring break caring for wounded service men and women at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

The AUM and AU Schools of Nursing launched a partnership with Walter Reed this week called Project SERVE to train nursing students to better understand the challenges faced by returning service members and veterans. Commander Michele Kane, the current director of the Centers for Nursing Science and Clinical Inquiry at Walter Reed and a 1992 alumna of the Auburn Montgomery School of Nursing, helped develop the program.

AUM and AU nursing students spent a week focusing on the different points of care for wounded soldiers – from injury to recovery. They rotated through the Intensive Care Unit, surgical inpatient unit, inpatient and outpatient physical therapy, inpatient and outpatient mental health, and the Warrior Transition units on base. They met not only with wounded warriors, but also with their families – allowing them to gain an understanding of the issues loved ones face during the recovery process.
