Alabama First Lady Dianne Bentley delivers address at International Women's Day

by Buffy Lockette | Mar 06, 2014

Alabama First Lady Dianne Bentley served as keynote speaker at Auburn Montgomery’s inaugural International Women's Day event on March 6. Praising legendary Alabama women such as Rosa Parks, Helen Keller, Tallulah Bankhead and Condoleezza Rice, she discussed how difficult it was for her at first, as a naturally shy person, to be thrust into the spotlight when her husband, Governor Robert Bentley, was elected to office in 2010.

“I had the option to let fear keep me from accomplishing anything as First Lady, but that would have been a wasted opportunity," she told the crowd of AUM students, faculty and staff.

As First Lady, Bentley has used her voice to advocate for foster care and adoption. She and the governor are the parents of four sons, two of them adopted. “They have been loved so long no one remembers which two,” she said.

Bentley also promotes domestic violence awareness and prevention through her support of the Family Justice Centers and encourages childhood literacy by reading to schools.
