Author of new biography on Kathryn Tucker Windham and Charlie Lucas to speak at AUM on Thursday

by User Not Found | Sep 17, 2013

Author Kerry Madden-Lunsford will discuss and sign copies of her new book, "Nothing Fancy About Kathryn and Charlie," on Sept. 19, 7:30 p.m., in Goodwyn Hall 109. The illustrated biography, with artwork by the author's daughter, Lucy, celebrates the friendship between beloved storyteller Kathryn Tucker Windham and popular folk artist Charlie Lucas.

Kathryn Tucker Windham, who died in 2011, was a noted Alabama storyteller and former journalist, perhaps best known for “13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey.” Charlie “The Tin Man” Lucas is a self-taught artist popular statewide for his scrap metal sculptures and other works of art. Three of his pieces are currently on display on the AUM quad and he is planning to attend the book signing.

Longtime Selma neighbors and friends, Windham and Lucas began their special friendship with the simple gift of a tomato sandwich. They discovered stories, art, and laughter while exploring the bustling streets and back roads of Alabama together.

Mockingbird Publishing, owned by AUM English alumna Ashley Gordon, published the book. A cause-based, independent publishing company, Mockingbird was established to coordinate the production and distribution of literary works while raising awareness and funds for social outreach and charitable organizations. All proceeds from “Nothing Fancy About Kathryn and Charlie” will be donated to Windham’s beloved Selma-Dallas County Public Library. Books will be available for purchase at the event.
