Outreach accepting nominations, applications for 2013 Faculty Outreach Award and Outreach Grants

The Vice Chancellor for Outreach and Strategic Initiatives is pleased to announce the availability of funding for 2013 awards created to recognize and advance outstanding faculty research and other scholarly activity that positively impacts the community. The Office of University Outreach is opening the nomination period for the Auburn Montgomery Excellence in Faculty Outreach Award and application period for the Auburn Montgomery Outreach Grant awards. Nominations and applications will be accepted through the end of April. Theatre AUM to open The Normal Heart on Thursday

Opening at Theatre AUM on Valentine’s Day, "The Normal Heart" is a Tony Award-winning play written by Larry Kramer about the rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 1980s. Show dates are Feb. 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23 and 24, with show times at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free to AUM students, employees and alumni with Warhawk ID; $10 for general audiences; and $5 for seniors, military and non-AUM students. Kroft to offer 'Cell Talk' at next Common Reading Program on Feb. 19

graphic of blood cellsThe Common Reading Program will welcome Dr. Tim Kroft, Assistant Professor in Biology, to present "Cell Talk" on Tuesday, Feb. 19, from noon - 1 p.m. in the East Room on the 10th floor of Young Tower. Don't worry - if you have class until 12:05 or need to go to class at 12:45, it's OK to come late or leave early. Math expert Micchelli to speak at AUM on Feb. 22

Professor Charles A. MicchelliProfessor Charles A. Micchelli will present "Flat Interpolation" on Friday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. in Goodwyn Hall 202. Micchelli is a Distinguished Research Professor at the University at Albany, State University of New York, and is among the top mathematicians in the world for his significant contributions in theories of approximation, including interpolation. In this lecture, he will review briefly some aspects of multivariate interpolation, describe some unsolved problems about multivariate interpolation, and present some recent results about the limit of scaled multivariate interpolation by a translation kernel known in the literature as "Flat Interpolation." This lecture is made possible through the generous support of the AUM Lecturer's Program and the Department of Mathematics.

Learn about healthy relationships at 'iHeart' program on Thursday

Come check out "iHeart: Healthy Relationships," a guide to healthy dating and relationships, on Thursday at noon in Goodwyn Hall 109. "iHeart" is an interactive program that will inform you and help you identify the characteristics of a healthy relationship vs. an unhealthy relationship. Refreshments will be served.

Come meet Alpha Gamma Delta next week on the Quad

The ladies of Alpha Gamma Delta will be outside Goodwyn Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day, Feb. 18-21, to talk to AUM women who might be interested in joining a sorority. On Thursday, Feb. 21, interested ladies can grab their lunch and join Alpha Gam on the Quad to mingle with the sisters and learn more about the sorority. David Burke
Dr. David A. Burke

Dr. David A. Burke, Adjunct Professor in History and International Studies, recently published the book Atomic Testing in Mississippi about America's only nuclear detonations east of the Mississippi River. Baxterville School, a rural public school near Hattiesburg, Miss., and just five miles from where the atomic testing took place, has used Burke's work as background research on a clean-water project they have submitted in Samsung's Solve for Tomorrow contest. LaRel Jackson, a junior guard majoring in physical education from Redbay, Fla., recently was named the sixth recipient of the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award for the 2012-13 school year for his efforts both on and off the court. Read more at aumathletics.com.

 

 

Ashley Wright
Ashley Wright

Ashley Wright, an alumna of the Department of Communication and Dramatic Arts, won the 2012 Air Combat Command Civilian Print Journalist of the Year award. The award was announced recently by Air Combat Command officials along with other results of the 2012 ACC Public Affairs Media Contest. "Throughout 2012, ACC's Public Affairs professionals at all levels successfully communicated the accomplishments of Airmen and command priorities to a worldwide audience," said Col. Todd Vician, Headquarters ACC Public Affairs director. "This year's awards program recognized sustained excellence across the command, and all winners should be very proud of their noteworthy support to the Air Force mission."

 

Dr. Qiang Zhai
Dr. Qiang Zhai

Dr. Qiang Zhai, Dean of the Confucius Institute and Professor in History and International Studies, chaired and commented on the panel "Domestic and International Perspectives on the Sino-American Rapprochement" at the annual convention of the American Historical Association, Jan. 4-6, in New Orleans. In addition, Zhai's article "From Estrangement to Normalization: Sino-French Relations, 1949-1964" was published in the Journal of the Chinese Communist History in August.
