Follow Auburn Montgomery:

The city of Montgomery has initiated a fats, oils and grease (FOG) recycling program developed to provide an environmentally friendly option for household grease generated from cooking. Grease recycling containers are free of charge. Simply dispose of used FOG in the containers and drop off at one of the convenient exchange locations. For more information, call 334-206-1600.

AUM departments in need of recycling bins should contact Nichole Thompson at 244-3106.

Save the date: Curtiss to celebrate birthday on Jan. 26

 

AUM's own Warhawk mascot, Curtiss, will soon mark his first birthday! On Saturday, Jan. 26, join Curtiss and friends for a squawk-tacular birthday celebration. Our women's and men's basketball teams will take on William Carey University at 2 and 4 p.m., with the party happening between the two match-ups in the Physical Education Complex. The Auburn University Pep Band will make its annual trek to AUM that day to help celebrate. Stay tuned for more details to come.

AUM Schools get new Web URLs, overall website performance improved

AUM's five schools now each have their own web spaces as follows:

This update helps make managing the content for each school easier. The content and appearance of the pages have not changed. In some cases, if you have a page saved as a "favorite," you may need to update that URL. For example, what used to be www.aum.edu/schools/school-of-liberal-arts/advising is now www.liberalarts.aum.edu/advising. If you have any questions, contact Charise Alexander Adams at calexa19@aum.edu or 244-3643.

Alabama Power Foundation gives $150,000 to AUM to support Wellness Center

Athletics announces 2012 Hall of Fame Class

Support AUM Athletics by eating at Moe's Wednesday

Moe's logoSupport AUM Athletics by eating at Moe’s Southwest Grill the first Wednesday of each month. (NOTE: Because classes began Jan. 7, this month's event is taking place on the second Wednesday. This is ONLY for January.) Be sure to take an AUM/Moe’s coupon and AUM will receive 20 percent of your purchase receipt. You must present a coupon to the cashier in order for AUM to receive the donation. Coupons can be picked up at Physical Education Complex 100, or you can print one.

Candidates for Assistant Professor in British Romanticism on campus beginning Tuesday

The AUM campus community is invited to presentations by candidates for Assistant Professor in British Romanticism in the Department of English and Philosophy taking place from 12:05 p.m. to 1:05 p.m. on the following dates in Liberal Arts 224:

Candidate for Global Experiences Abroad Manager on campus Jan. 18

Achala Rockwell, a candidate for the position of Global Experiences Abroad Manager, will be on campus on Friday, Jan. 18, to present to the campus community from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in Goodwyn Hall 109.

Employees encouraged to vote in Teachers' Retirement System runoff election

Auburn Montgomery employees who are members of the Teachers' Retirement System will receive a ballot by mail this week for a runoff election for two seats on the 14-member TRS Board of Control, which is responsible for establishing policy, overseeing system investments and representing member interests. The outcome of this election will have a significant impact on the future direction of the TRS and the role played by the Alabama Education Association. Visit the TRS website for candidate biographies, statements  and a sample ballot. For more information on the election, go to the website. The TRS encourages members to exercise their opportunity to vote; ballots must be returned by 4 p.m. on Feb. 11.

Post-grad years featured in Goodwyn Gallery exhibit

The life of the 20-something is explored in the new exhibit "In Dog Years" opening at Goodwyn Hall Gallery today. The collection features the contemporary photography of Atlanta artist Anthony Smith and focuses on the lives of recent college graduates. The exhibit will run through Jan. 24. Wood set to speak at MLK Reflections Breakfast on Jan. 21

Learning Center, ISL announce spring semester schedules

The Learning Center, which provides tutoring services in writing, mathematics, accounting and finance, will be available at the following locations and times this spring:

Library Tower 225

  • Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.
  • Friday, 9 a.m. - noon

The Commons, second floor lobby

  • Monday through Thursday, 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

International Students Lounge (international students only)

  • Tuesday and Thursday, 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

The Instructional Support Lab, offering assistance in mathematics and sciences, will be available Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., in Goodwyn Hall 203.

Common Reading Program holding first spring meeting on Friday

Get connected this semester with a new group of friends and faculty. The Common Reading Program will host its first round table discussion group on Friday, Jan. 11, from noon - 1 p.m. in Taylor Center 230. Previous attendees from fall semester and new attendees for spring semester are invited for free pizza. If you did not pick up a free book before the holiday break and would like to join the group, you may still get a book by contacting Debbie Hooks at mhooks3@aum.edu or 334-244-3259, or come by Young Tower 706. CAB applications due by Jan. 14

The AUM Campus Activities Board is the student planning team responsible for extracurricular activities and events. Membership in CAB enables students to improve their leadership skills while learning how to plan, organize and initiate events for other students to enjoy. The deadline for CAB applications is Monday, Jan. 14, at 5 p.m. Submit your application online today

Dr. Mosisa Aga

Dr. Yanyi Djamba, Director of the Center for Demographic Research and Professor in Sociology; Dr. Theresa Davidson, Associate Professor of Sociology at Samford University; and Dr. Mosisa Aga, Associate Professor in Mathematics, published an article titled “The State of Sexual Health in the U.S. South: Opportunities and Challenges” in Advances in Applied Sociology 2012, Vol. 2 No. 4, 303-308.

 

 

LaKenya Drayton

LaKenya Drayton, a senior forward majoring in criminal justice from Hephzibah, Ga., was the first recipient of the Southern States Athletic Conference's women's basketball Player of the Week award for the 2012-13 season. Drayton, who played a key role in keeping the Warhawks undefeated in the SSAC last weekend, is the first women's basketball player from AUM to receive the honor since Cassie Moore in February, 2010. She currently leads the Warhawks in points (15.1) and rebounds (7.6) per game. Read more at aumathletics.com

 

 

Mike Esco
Dr. Michael Esco

Dr. Michael Esco, Assistant Professor in Physical Education and Exercise Science, was recently selected to serve on the Health and Fitness Specialist (HFS) Certification Committee for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). The ACSM is the world-leading organization for exercise, sport and health science research. The HFS is an advanced certification through ACSM for exercise professionals who work with individuals who have medically controlled diseases. The committee is primarily responsible for the overall direction of the credential, examination preparation and textbook reviews.

 

 

Mehmet Sahinoglu
Dr. Mehmet Sahinoglu

Dr. Mehmet Sahinoglu, Director of the Informatics Institute, has published the article "Ecological Risk-O-Meter: A Risk Assessor and Manager Software Tool for Better Decision Making in Ecosystems" in the journal Environmetrics. Co-authored with Susan J. Simmons and Lawrence B. Cahoon, University of North Carolina Wilmington, and Scott Morton, AUM, the article discusses a software tool that not only assesses environmental and ecological risks, but also takes into account potential solutions and provides guidance as to how spending can be optimized to reducing overall environmental risk.
