Warhawks men's soccer conference champs, earn berth to NAIA tournament

IMAGE: AUM Warhawks 2012 Men's Soccer TeamAfter winning its way into the 2012 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship with its 2-1 victory in the Southern States Athletic Conference Championship match, the Warhawks men's soccer team earned an official bid to the National Championship Tournament Sunday, as the NAIA officially released the 32 qualifiers for the opening round. Connect with others in the campus community through the Common Reading Program

IMAGE: book cover for The Immortal Life of Henrietta LacksAUM's Common Reading Program will continue through the spring, providing students, faculty and staff an opportunity to connect and learn from each other at luncheon discussions and additional events. The program's reading selection is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot, about a woman who continues to contribute to scientific discovery even though she has been dead for more than 60 years. If you are interested in reading the book and joining the discussion, contact Debbie Hooks at mhooks3@aum.edu by Nov. 20, and a free copy of the book will be ordered for you in time to read over the winter holiday break.

History students and faculty dig deep into Maxwell archives

IMAGE: Faculty and students from the AUM Department of History were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Air Force Historical Research Agency archives at Maxwell Air Force Base.Faculty and students from the Department of History were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Air Force Historical Research Agency archives at Maxwell Air Force Base on Nov. 2, conducted by Dr. Mary Dixie Dysart, Deputy Director. The group examined documents relating to the cold war in Alabama, such as documents relating to Operation Paperclip (a program to recruit German scientists and technicians to work in Alabama), the Bay of Pigs invasion, and oral histories. They also explored archives relating to the Tuskegee Airmen, architectural drawings of Air Force bases, and photographs of the 1910 Wright Brothers Flying School located on the site that eventually would become Maxwell Air Force Base. The Department of History wishes to thank Sophie Ryan, Chief of Institutional Effectiveness at the Air University, for arranging the visit, and Dr. Dysart for conducting the tour.

Registration open for spring Mandarin language classes presented by Confucius Institute

Celebration on Dec. 6 to honor Brown as she retires

Brown has served AUM for 36 of the 43 years she has worked in the field of education. Come honor and acknowledge the contributions she has made to AUM.

Staff Council invites all employees to holiday luncheon and market on Dec. 7

The Staff Council will host the annual employee holiday celebration on Friday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Taylor Center 221-223. All faculty and staff are invited to attend. The luncheon will be a potluck lunch, with dishes prepared from employees across campus and a main dish and beverages courtesy of the Office of the Chancellor. Employee service pins will be presented at the luncheon as well as door prizes, and bragging rights for the next year will be awarded to the winners of the table decorating contest. Also on tap on Dec. 7 is the holiday market, operating from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Taylor Center 230. Several vendors will be at the market offering great gifts for colleagues and friends. To be sure you are eligible to win a door prize at the holiday luncheon, you must RSVP to staffcouncil@aum.edu and you must be present at the luncheon when the door prizes are handed out.

IMAGE: Michael Bartsch, a pre-engineering student, was awarded the 2012 American Society of Professional Engineers Montgomery Chapter Scholarship on Nov. 7, presented to him by ASPE officer Sandy Faulkner.Michael Bartsch, a pre-engineering student, was awarded the 2012 American Society of Professional Engineers Montgomery Chapter Scholarship on Nov. 7, presented to him by ASPE officer Sandy Faulkner. Bartsch, nominated by a committee chaired by Dr. Yi Wang, Associate Professor in Mathematics, was chosen from four finalists. He currently sports a 4.0 grade-point average and works full-time as a residential construction project manager. Bartsch is pursuing a degree in civil engineering to complement his bachelor's degree in business management. The ASPE scholarship is awarded to engineering students whose hometowns are within the Montgomery chapter's area.

Dr. Bob Evans, Professor in English and Philosophy, is the author of an essay in the new book The Hero's Quest, published as part of the Critical Insights series issued by Salem Press. Evans' essay is titled "Varied and Conflicting Quests in Melville's Moby-Dick: The Nine 'Gams.'"

Dr. Timothy Henderson, Chair and Professor in History, presented his paper "The United States and Mexico During the 1960s" at the 78th annual convention of the Southern Historical Association. The convention was held Nov. 1-4 in Mobile, Ala.

Dr. Michele Olson

 

Dr. Michele Olson, Professor in Physical Education and Exercise Science, was the noted expert in the Oct. 24 Chicago Tribune article "Pushing it" about the benefits of pushups.

 

 

IMAGE: Daniel McElveen, Katelyn Sanders, and Kev JohnsonDaniel McElveen, a senior math/computer science major, Katelyn Sanders, a junior secondary education/math major, and Kev Johnson, a sophomore secondary education/math major, presented a contributed research talk at the eighth University of North Carolina Greensboro Regional Mathematics and Statistics Conference on Nov. 3. Their talk, “Diffusive logistic equation with nonlinear boundary conditions and Sigma-shaped bifurcation curves,” represents the culmination of their research efforts from the beginning of summer 2012 and initiates the study of a population model with logistic growth, diffusion, grazing, and a certain nonlinear boundary condition. The conference was attended by 115 undergraduate and graduate students. This undergraduate research project was sponsored by the AUM Department of Mathematics and a travel grant from the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
