Writers' Blocks young writers unveil fifth published volume

IMAGE: Child holds up book, The Young Writers of the Molina Learning Center: Volume Five. The children of Writers' Blocks, an after school writing program for children residing in Southlawn Commons and Sherwood housing communities, unveiled their new book, the 2012 collection "The Young Writers of the Molina Learning Center: Volume Five." Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange was in attendance to read from their work and sign copies of the book. Writers' Blocks was founded in 1997 by Nancy Anderson, Associate Professor in English and Philosophy and director of Actions Build Community. She and volunteers run a writers’ workshop at Southlawn Commons and Sherwood throughout the academic year as a free after school enrichment program. Children ages 6-12 gather at the Molina Learning Center in Southlawn Commons twice a week to work on poetry and prose. Over the summer, they edit and organize their work into a printed anthology. In June 2010, the children were surprised with a personal letter from President Obama, who had received a copy of the 2009 collection of their writings, "The Young Writers of the Molina Learning Center: Volume Two," which included many pieces on the historic 2008 election.

AUM students find homes for 61 pets

IMAGE: Dog with tongue hanging out.The AUM Nonprofit Leadership Alliance hosted its annual Find a Friend at AUM Pet Adopt-a-thon on Sept. 29 on campus. Nine pet shelters and rescue organizations brought homeless pets to the event, and 61 of those pets found homes. By organizing and operating service projects in the Montgomery area – including the annual pet adopt-a-thon and holiday programs for children from low-income homes – the students gain skills in grant writing, fundraising, budgeting, risk management, advisory board development, recruiting and managing volunteers, and event planning. "People who want to work for nonprofits often lack the business skills needed to manage a nonprofit organization," said Tink-Lucy Bouler, Executive Director. "At AUM, our nonprofit leadership program prepares students not only to be successful, but also significant for our community and equipped to change the world."

People at AUM

Don Chon
Dr. Don Chon

Dr. Don Chon, Assistant Professor in Justice and Public Safety, had his article "Test of Impacts of Gender Equality and Economic Development on Sexual Violence" accepted by Journal of Family Violence. In the article, Chon reported that developed countries, which enjoy a high level of gender equality, actually experience a higher level of sexual violence than developing countries. Chon explained it by citing the backlash hypothesis that men feel threatened by improved women's socioeconomic status and gender equality. As a result, men have a tendency to use sexual violence as a tool to keep women in their inferior positions.

Michele Olson
Dr. Michele Olson

Dr. Michele Olson, Professor in Physical Education and Exercise Science, and newly named AUM Ida Belle Young Professor, provided her expertise for two recent articles featured via major news outlets:

"With the exciting opening of AUM's Wellness Center, I think it's a fortuitous time for these articles to be in the current national media.  Both reports regard common questions and concerns that many have about fitness and weight control. It is very gratifying when research I have done here at AUM with Dr. Hank Williford reaches beyond the local sector out to a national forum where it can (hopefully) benefit many people," Olson said.
