Dr. Denise Davis-Maye, Associate Professor in Sociology, is the latest member of the AUM family to be surprised with an Unsung Hero Award from the Office of International Affairs. The Unsung Hero Award recognizes the contributions of staff units or individuals who contribute to the campus’ globalization mission, but whose normal mandate or duties typically would not put those staffers in a position to deal with International Affairs.
Dr. Yanyi Djamba, Director of the Center for Demographic Research and Professor in Sociology, and Sitawa Kimuna (East Carolina University) have published an article titled "Migration, Sexual Behavior and Perceptions of Risk: Is the Place of Origin a Factor in HIV Infection?" in the September issue of Advances in Applied Sociology, 2012 Vol. 2, No. 3, 167-178.
In addition, Djamba was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the Southern Demographic Association (SDA). While his term will not officially begin until January 2013, he will travel to Williamsburg, Va., next week to attend the annual SDA conference. Djamba and the Center for Demographic Research, a unit of Auburn Montgomery Outreach, will host the 2013 conference at the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery. This will bring close to 200 SDA professionals from around the country.
Dr. Darren Harris-Fain, Professor and Chair in English and Philosophy, published his article "It Rhymes with Bust: The Failure of the St. John Picture Novels" in the International Journal of Comic Art (Fall 2012). The article explores an attempt in 1950 to create a line of crime stories for adults in comics format, anticipating the later graphic novel. The article is an expansion of a paper he presented in 2009 at the Popular Culture Association conference in New Orleans.
Harris-Fain also served as an adviser to volume 258 of Nineteenth-Century Literature Criticism, edited by Lawrence J. Trudeau (Gale, 2012). Harris-Fain wrote the introduction, bibliographies, and annotations for the entry on Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark. In addition, Harris-Fain wrote the entries on Harvey Kurtzman’s Jungle Book, Alan Moore’s Watchmen, and Alison Bechdel’s Dykes to Watch Out For for the multivolume reference work Critical Survey of Graphic Novels, edited by Bart Beaty and Stephen Weiner (Salem Press, 2012).
