IMAGE: atomic blastThe decisions made in 1945 to drop atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki continue to shape the world's geopolitics and U.S. foreign policy. The Office of International Affairs will host "Hiroshima/Nagasaki: The Aftermath and Legacy" on Wednesday, Oct. 31, and Thursday, Nov. 1, in Moore Hall 106N. On Oct. 31 there will be a screening at 6 p.m. of the documentary "White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki" followed by a panel discussion. On Nov. 1, a reception will be held at 6 p.m. followed by a live telecast with a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing. The goals of the two-night program are to better inform audiences on campus and in the community and challenge them to engage in deeper introspection on the topic. Terry Winemiller
Dr. Terry Winemiller

Dr. Terry Winemiller, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Geography and Director of AUM’s Geospatial Research Laboratory, has been invited by the Corporación Ciudad Alfaro, Montechristi, Manabi, Ecuador, to assist in efforts to uncover the remains of a large archaeological site which might represent a pre-Inca State. The site, named Cerros de Jaboncillo, is located in a mountainous region approximately 200 kilometers southwest of the nation’s capital city of Quito. Winemiller and AUM GIS student Chris Blair will be in Ecuador Oct. 6-16 developing a geographic information system to document the location of smaller settlement units and guide Ecuadorian archaeologists in their efforts to determine the nature and extent of the site. Archaeologists working in the region believe that the abandoned settlement is the remains of a large pre-Incan State. Winemiller and Blair will be using satellite remote sensing data and information collected during several years of excavation by Ecuadorian archaeologists to construct the GIS. According to Winemiller, "receipt of this invitation demonstrates that AUM’s GIS program continues to be internationally recognized for research and teaching."
