Don't forget to pick up your Warhawk Access card this week!

Warhawk Access image AUM Warhawk Access student and employee identification cards are available at the ID Card Office, located between the Bookstore and The Roost and operated by the AUM Bookstore. If you have an old Senators Card ID, you can take it to the ID Card Office to exchange it for one of the new cards. There will be no cost to replace old Senators Cards through Labor Day. After that, the replacement fee will be $10.

 

River Region United Way campaign kicks off Thursday at Rally in the Alley

Headlines

Weil Fellowship bringing Age of Lincoln author to campus on Sept. 23-24

Dr. O. Vernon BurtonThe School of Liberal Arts will install Dr. O. Vernon Burton as the latest recipient of the Weil Fellowship when he visits the AUM campus on Sept. 23-24. Burton will present a sesquicentennial lecture on Abraham Lincoln (Sunday, Sept. 23, 7:30 p.m., Goodwyn Hall 109) and provide a demonstration on how his CyberInstitute has advanced the application of digital history as a tool for both research and classroom instruction (Monday, Sept. 24, 7:30 p.m., Goodwyn Hall 109). Both presentations are free and open to the public.

Burton is Professor of History at Clemson University and Director of the Clemson CyberInstitute. He is also a senior research scientist at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Since earning his doctorate in American history from Princeton University, Burton has authored seven books, most recently the award-winning Age of Lincoln (2008). Nationally recognized for his teaching, in 1999 he received the U.S. Research and Doctoral University Professor of the Year award.

Established in 1995 in honor of Adolph Weil, the Weil Fellow in the Arts and Humanities is awarded to persons of distinguished achievement in the arts and humanities: writers, artists or renowned scholars in one or more of the liberal arts disciplines. See previous Weil Fellows

Chancellor attends Department of Defense civilian training

Chancellor John G. Veres IIIChancellor John G. Veres III recently attended the U.S. Department of Defense’s Joint Civilian Orientation Conference in Washington, D.C. He was one of only 40 civilians invited to attend the summer session of the bi-annual event out of more than 1,000 nominations, and he was the only representative from Alabama. more

Confucius Institute introduces Mandarin Chinese language and culture at local elementary school

Dr. Yaw-Chin Ho, Dean of the Confucius Institute, and Dr. Sheila Austin, Associate Dean and Department Head in the School of Education, are working with Montgomery Public Schools to introduce Mandarin Chinese language and culture to public schools this year. James Wilson Elementary School will be the pilot site for the new program that will roll out Sept. 6 to fourth graders. The class will be taught two days a week by a teacher of Chinese descent. Wilson Principal Meredith Bishop expressed her excitement about having the program in her school and looks forward to working with AUM this school year. At the school’s open house on Aug. 16, parents and students were given a taste of this opportunity to experience a different language and culture.

Fine Arts faculty displaying works through Sept. 28

AUM Department of Fine Arts faculty exhibitThe Department of Fine Arts is showcasing the art works of its faculty at the annual faculty exhibit in the gallery in Goodwyn Hall 101 through Sept. 28. On display are the works of professors Will Fenn, Breuna Baine, Andrew Hairstans, Heidi Lingamfelter, Sue Jensen and adjunct instructor Greg Brown. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Library offering faculty workshop on journal citations and quality Sept. 7

The AUM Library is offering a workshop for faculty who are interested in learning more about sources that track journal citations and indicators of journal quality. This workshop should be very useful to faculty who will be preparing documentation for the tenure and promotion process. The workshop will be held on Friday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. in the classroom on the second floor of Young Tower. Barbara Hightower will cover the citation databases and Google Scholar, and Rickey Best will cover journal quality indicators, such as the journal impact factor. For more information, contact the Library Dean's Office at 244-3200.

AUM 'yard sale' benefits clubs and organizations as well as the environment

The AUM Green Alliance hosted a campus-wide yard sale on Saturday, helping student clubs and organizations from across campus raise funds for special projects while being resourceful and increasing awareness of the green benefits of "using items once loved." Theatre AUM announces 2012-13 schedule

Theatre AUM has announced its schedule for the 2012-13 season, and it includes a Pulitzer Prize winner and a collection of one-act productions written by AUM students. Here's the schedule:

The Roost and AUMazing Bean announce Labor Day hours

In observance of Labor Day, The Roost and AUMazing Bean will be closed Saturday, Sept. 1, through Monday, Sept. 3. The Roost will be open on Tuesday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with limited selections, and AUMazing Bean will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Normal hours for both services will resume on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

Use new design request form for your graphic design needs

University Relations has updated its Graphic Design Job Request Form and is asking users to fill out the new form when requesting services. The form is available through the website or AUMnet at http://www.aum.edu/docs/university-relations/graphic_design_job_form_2012.pdf. If you have downloaded the old form to your computer, please delete it or replace it with the new one and stop using the old form. University Relations appreciates your assistance and cooperation and stands ready to serve your marketing and communication needs.

Warhawk Alley to give students more campus space to meet and greet

The area on the first floor of the Taylor Center that once was the Cashier Office in its final stages of transformation into Warhawk Alley. Warhawk Alley will offer students more space to attend programs, meet with their student organizations or just gather and relax between classes. The Student Government Association and the Campus Activities Board offices also will be located in Warhawk Alley. Stay tuned to News and Headlines for grand opening announcements later this semester.

Students who have questions about recognized student organizations, Student Government Association, Campus Activities Board and any other student involvement and campus leadership programming needs can contact Lakecia Harris, Director of Student Involvement and Leadership Programs, or Joel Hughes, Campus Activities Program Coordinator. Their offices are located on the first floor of Taylor Center in rooms 155 and 153.

Learning Center adds tutoring services on Fridays

The AUM Learning Center will begin offering tutoring services on Fridays in writing and mathematics from 9 a.m. - noon, beginning Friday, Aug. 31. The Learning Center is located in Young Tower 225.

Dr. Don Chon

Dr. Don Chon, Assistant Professor in Justice and Public Safety, recently published his research article titled "The Impact of Population Heterogeneity and Income Inequality on Homicide Rates: A Cross-National Assessment" in the International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, a peer-reviewed journal, volume 56(5), 730-748.

Dr. Michael B. Simmons

Dr. Michael B. Simmons, Associate Professor in History and and International Studies, has published a critical review in the Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2012.08.36, which is accessible online. The review critiques Bernard Fragu (trans.), Arnobe. Contre les gentiles (Contre les païens). Tome VI. Livres VI-VII. Collection des Universités de France série latine, 396. Paris: Les Belles Lettres, 2010. Pp. lxxiii, 257. ISBN 9782251014555. €51,80; which is a French translation published in the distinguished Budé series, with accompanying commentary, including the Latin edition, of the Adversus nationes of Arnobius of Sicca, a professor of Latin Literature who lived in Sicca Veneria (Le Kef, Tunisia), in the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis, during the "Great Persecution" of the Christians (A.D. 303-305), and according to Jerome, converted to Christ by means of dreams. Simmons has also been invited by an editor of The Journal of Early Christian Studies, published by Johns Hopkins University Press, to write a critical review of the recent book by Elizabeth Digeser, A Threat to Public Piety. Dr. Yi Wang

Dr. Yi Wang, Associate Professor in Mathematics, recently delivered an invited lecture "Functions with spline spectra and their applications to sampling non-bandlimited signals" in the 20th International Conference on Finite or Infinite Dimensional Complex Analysis and Applications in Hanoi, Vietnam. The conference attracted researchers from dozens of countries in America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The conference has a long history and is influential in the area of complex analysis and applications.
