Nursing's Blue Jean Ball set for Oct. 5
The 12th annual Blue Jean Ball, a fundraiser for the Auburn University and Auburn Montgomery Schools of Nursing, is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5, at the Crooked Oaks Hunting Lodge in Notasulga, Ala. The Schools of Nursing will bid “Happy Trails” to Coach Pat Dye’s Crooked Oaks Hunting Lodge in 2012 as this will be the final time it will be used to hold the fundraiser. more

Kerr named Associate Dean of Enrollment Management
Dr. Lisa Kerr has been chosen to serve as Associate Dean of Enrollment Management. In her new role, Kerr will primarily focus on the retention efforts of the university, while continuing to work with AUM's Summer Bridge program and Academic Advising areas. Previously, Kerr served as First Year Experience program manager and was instrumental in developing the new Common Reading Program and implementing the Early Alert program. "As an educator, my primary passion has always been to support students as they identify and actualize their potential," Kerr said. "I am excited at the opportunities that this new position provides, especially relating to institutional initiatives dedicated to promoting student success. I appreciate the dynamic, student-centered environment at AUM and look forward to working with everyone across campus as we change the world, one student at a time."

Summer concertgoers get prescription for fun from The Good Doctor despite weather
Despite the stormy weather and general Friday the 13th doldrums, nearly 100 people showed up to the second installment of the AUM Summer Concert Series on July 13. The event was moved inside to the Physical Education Complex, where guests set up their own family picnics on the gym floor and listened to Auburn funk band The Good Doctor rock the house. Mark your calendar for the final concert of the season on Aug. 17, when AUM alumnus Clint Darby and the BTW Magnet High School Chorus will perform. Learn more at www.aum.edu/summerconcert.

Several academic policies available for comment through Aug. 10
Five proposed academic policies (regarding Fulbright Scholars, cancelling class, syllabus standards, independent study and posting grades) are available online for comment and review through Friday, Aug 10. After consideration of the comments, the proposed policies will be sent to the chancellor for approval or returned to the appropriate party for further consideration.

Local nonprofit invites higher ed community to workshop on unlocking Alabama's potential
How do Alabamians connect with their neighbors? Members and partners of the Alabama Poverty Project's Higher Education Alliance will answer that question and more at the summer workshop Developing a Long-Term Vision to Unlock Alabama's Potential. Cristin Foster from the David Mathews Center for Civic Life will discuss how Alabama stacks up against the rest of the nation in public work, like attending meetings and working with neighbors to solve problems. The keynote speaker will be Jon Mason, Director of ServeAlabama: The Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Volunteer Service. The workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, at Southside Baptist Church in Birmingham. CEUs are available.

Dr. Michele Olson, Professor in Physical Education and Exercise Science, was interviewed by the national news program "The Real Winning Edge" on July 12 at the Montgomery Country Club. The program was in Montgomery filming a segment on local teen Summer Collins, a 16-year-old junior tennis champ who came back from a major knee injury as a child to excel athletically at the national level. Olson is a friend of the Collins family and has provided training and advice to Summer over the years. Olson is not new to tennis training. She competed on the collegiate level as an undergraduate at Huntingdon College and has provided guidance to tennis players as renowned as Anna Kournikova. The nationally syndicated program "The Real Winning Edge" features stories of young American athletes who have overcome great obstacles to achieve success in their sport. Locally the show airs on WNCF, ABC 32. Producer Brenda Salmon said an air date has not yet been determined for the segment including Olson. Learn more at www.realwinningedge.com.
Dr. Roger Ritvo, Professor in Management, had the article "Developing an Open, Democratic and Civil Society: Exemplary NGOs in Post-Soviet Republic of Georgia" published in the August 2012 issue of Appreciative Inquiry Practitioner, volume 14, number 3. This research was partially supported by the Research Council, the School of Business and the Department of Management.
