GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK: The average driver can save up to 30 percent on the annual use of fuel by following these easy tips:
-
1. Warm the Engine - your car is warm when the oil pressure gauge shows normal
-
2. Avoid "Jackrabbit" Starts - smooth, moderate acceleration increases gas mileage
-
3. Don't Race Your Engine - racing your engine wastes fuel and is harmful to the engine
-
4. Don't Speed - ease off the accelerator once at desired speed; cars run most efficiently at approximately 55 mph
-
5. Avoid Stop-and-Go Driving - learn the timing of stop lights on your regular routes
-
6. Don't Idle - turn your engine off if you stop for longer than one minute
-
7. Drive Hills Properly - avoid pressing the accelerator all the way down when climbing hills.

The schools of Nursing, Liberal Arts and Business will participate in the morning ceremony at 10 a.m., and students in the schools of Sciences and Education will walk across the stage at 2 p.m. Both ceremonies will be held in the Physical Education Complex. Any faculty or staff interested in contributing to the celebration of our students' successes as a greeter or usher during either of the ceremonies should contact Lisa Kerr at lkerr1@aum.edu.

Four past or present AUM students are credited on the title pages for their help on two newly published books dealing with William Shakespeare. Sarah Fredericks and Deborah Cosier Solomon are listed as editorial assistants of the volume Culture and Society in Shakespeare’s Day, and Jeffrey Moody and MeKoi Scott are listed as editorial assistants on the volume Literature and the Theater in Shakespeare’s Day. The books are part of a three-volume set about Shakespeare’s life and times.
Fredericks, Solomon and Moody all have both English and Master of Liberal Arts degrees from AUM. Fredericks will be applying soon to Ph.D. programs, Moody has been admitted into the Ph.D. program at the University of Tennessee, and Solomon is presently finishing her Ph.D. work at Florida State University. Scott is currently an undergraduate English major.

Alexis Franco, a graphic design major, was awarded first place for her poster "Profit by Investing in Workers with Disabilities" in the Postsecondary Division of the 2012 "Ability Counts" Poster Journalism Competition held by the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services. Franco received a $300 prize and was honored at an awards luncheon on May 4 at the Capital City Club in Montgomery. Franco's sponsor was Associate Professor Breuna Baine.
Dr. Brian E. Johnson, assistant professor in Sociology, published the paper "American intercity passenger rail must be truly high-speed and transit-oriented" in the Journal of Transport Geography. In the paper, Johnson argues that while the High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Program succeeds in proposing a truly competitive high-speed rail route in California, the proposed routes in the Northeast, Midwest and Northwest will continue to chug along at medium speeds and attract few new riders from among those who currently travel those areas via highway or air. Johnson recommends that the program increase train speeds and that local planning jurisdictions broadly liberalize land use controls to allow for compact development around stations.
Danielle Kirkpatrick, an exercise science major and catcher on the Warhawks softball team from McDonough, Ga., was named the 12th recipient of the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award for the 2011-12 school year for her efforts both on and off the court. more
