Last year, Auburn Montgomery announced a call for proposals from students and alumni for a large public sculpture to be fabricated by AUM for permanent display on campus. The proposed sculpture will become a visual symbol for AUM while serving as an appropriate expression of AUM's commitment to creating a beautiful academic and community space.

The proposals are in and the scale models have been built. Now its your turn to pick the winner. Scale models of the final four will be on display in the Library lobby from April 15 until April 30 along with the artist statements. Images and descriptions are also available at aum.edu and my.aum.edu. The voting period will end at 8 a.m. on April 30.

Winemiller, center, with William Folan, right, and Ramundo Gonzalez Heredia, a member of Folan's original survey team, verifies the measurements of architectural features in the GIS using original survey documents from the project.

Dr. Terry Winemiller, Associate Professor of anthropology and geography, spent spring break in Campeche, Mexico, working with archaeologists from the Universidad Autónoma de Campeche on a 3-D Geographic Information System of the archaeological site of Calakmul. The project is partially funded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the Belgian Science Policy. Calakmul, a 2,000-year-old Maya site, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. The ancient settlement covers an area of more than 30 square kilometers and contains the ruins of approximately 6,500 architectural features. The Carnegie Institution for Science partially mapped the site from 1931 to 1933. A group of archaeologists under the direction of Dr. William Folan of UAC mapped the site in its entirety from 1980 to 1990 and published the official site map in 2001. Upon completion, which is set for early this summer, Winemiller's project will represent the largest 3-D GIS completed for any archaeological site to date. The interactive 3-D GIS will be showcased on AUM's Carnegie Explorer website using technology provided by Google.
