Eisenhower National Security Series returns to AUM on April 2

Eisenhower series logoThe theme "Engaging National Security Policy and Challenges: Military and Civilian Perspectives" will be at the forefront of two panel discussions at the 2012 Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower National Security Series: College Program to be held at Auburn Montgomery, April 2-4. The Eisenhower Series College Program is an academic outreach program established by the Department of the Army to encourage dialogue on national security and other public policy issues between personnel and students of the U. S. Army War College and the civilian public, with emphasis on students and faculty at academic institutions throughout the United States. more

As we gear up for the rest of spring semester, let's all spend some time with our AUM family. Take a break after spring break and stop by the Goodwyn Hall lobby between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 21, for coffee, a doughnut and some quality time with your friends and neighbors in the AUM community.

Health management expert to speak at AUM on April 4

Dr. John JakicicAUM will welcome renowned researcher Dr. John Jakicic for two presentations on strategies for health promotion and healthy living on Wednesday, April 4. He will speak in Goodwyn Hall 112 from 10:45 a.m. to noon and again from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Known for his research regarding health management and behavioral interventions regarding nutrition and weight management, Jakicic is professor and chair of the Department of Health and Physical Activity, and director of the Physical Activity and Weight Management Center at the University of Pittsburgh. The lectures are free and open to the public.

Next hands-on training for website content managers on Friday

Learn more about the many capabilities of Sitefinity, AUM's online content management system, that can help you and end users make the most of AUM's website. This workshop will be a more hands-on, interactive session than the introductory sessions to the website. The workshop will be held on Friday, March 23, from 1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. in Clement Hall 114. The number of participants is limited to eight, so email Charise Alexander at calexa19@aum.edu to RSVP.

TIAA-CREF consultant on campus March 27 and 28 to provide long-term financial counseling for employees

Setting up a long-term financial plan can be a complicated task. A TIAA-CREF senior financial consultant will be at AUM to conduct individual counseling sessions for faculty and staff on March 27 and 28 in the West Room on the 10th floor of the Library Tower. Call the TIAA-CREF Service and Scheduling Group at 800-732-8353 to sign up for a counseling session.

Students from across the state will converge on AUM Friday for Alabama History Day

Alabama History Day is a history competition for students in grades six through 12 who've earned their place to compete at the state level through one of three regionals. The first and second place winners in each category will advance to the national contest held on the campus of the University of Maryland each June. Alabama History Day is held in conjunction with National History Day. more

Advancement accepting applications to be Advancement Ambassadors

The AUM Office of Advancement is accepting applications for the position of Advancement Ambassador for the 2012-13 academic year. The Advancement Ambassador team is a group of student volunteers who serve as the official hosts and hostesses for events sponsored by the Office of Advancement. Advancement Ambassadors will represent the AUM student body, administration, faculty and staff to persons both inside and outside the university at special events, including luncheons, alumni gatherings and receptions. Ambassadors will have the opportunity to meet leaders in the community and will be expected to be personable and able to communicate with people of all ages. The deadline for applications is Friday, April 20, and interviews will be conducted on Wednesday, April 25. Applications are available here. Male students invited to 'Keep it Real' meetings in March and April

The AUM Counseling Center invites male students to a series of outreach meetings called "Let’s Keep It Real." These weekly meetings will give students opportunities to converse with like-minded peers with similar interests about pertinent issues that are specific to men under the guidance of a counseling center staff member. Confidential discussion topics include: balancing academic and extracurricular activities; strengthening mental toughness; enhancing decision making and goal setting skills; stress management techniques; and building healthier relationships with family, friends and significant others. The "Let's Keep it Real" meetings will be held every Monday through April 16, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., in Library Tower 401. Visit the Counseling Center or call 244-3469 for more information.

Class visits with author they studied

Undergraduate and graduate students in AUM's class on Alabama Women Writers, taught by Dr. Nancy Grisham Anderson, spent March 4 with author Mary Ward Brown in a classroom on the campus of Judson College. The class had completed their study of Brown's books and met with her to discuss her writing and her career. One student commented after the session that it was "a once-in-a-lifetime experience." The same class traveled to Selma on March 18 to spend the afternoon with Charlie "The Tin Man" Lucas in his studio. The artist reminisced about his dear friend Kathryn Tucker Windham and talked about his career in art.

AUM Anglers cast some smiles

AUM Anglers teamed up with Bridges of Faith International to spend some time with a group of Ukrainian orphansAt a recent event at The Waters in Montgomery, the AUM Anglers teamed up with Bridges of Faith International to spend some time with a group of Ukrainian orphans. The Anglers helped the children make their first-ever catch, and a fun time was had by all.

BCM leads a different group of spring breakers

A group of Auburn Montgomery spent their spring break in Boston on a mission trip led by Baptist Campus Ministries.A group of Auburn Montgomery students spent their spring break in Boston on a mission trip led by Baptist Campus Ministries. "It gives more meaning to the time I have off if I can help others," said Alex Hood, a sophomore from Huntsville who worked as a life guard at the YMCA over Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks to earn the funds needed to participate in the trip. "All of my breaks have been devoted to this goal."

Physical Education club helps out at Special Olympics

The AUM Physical Education Majors Club recently lent a hand to the Special Olympics.The AUM Physical Education Majors Club recently lent a hand to the Special Olympics. AUM students coordinated a portion of the Alabama Special Olympics Basketball Tournament held at Frazer Methodist Church on March 9. They assisted in game management positions, interacted with the athletes and coordinated the awards ceremony. Eight high school-aged teams from throughout the state competed for gold medals. The club was honored and humbled to serve such great athletes and tremendous people.

Orlando Johnson, a senior Legal Studies major from Union Springs, Ala., was awarded the Myron C. Penn Youth Award on March 12. The award spotlights outstanding youth from Bullock County. When asked how he felt about receiving the award, Johnson said, "One word - grateful."

Dr. Michael B. Simmons

Dr. Michael B. Simmons, Associate Professor in History, read a paper titled "The 'viri novi' of Arnobius, Adversus nationes: Who are the 'new men'?," at the annual regional meeting of the American Academy of Religion (Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion) in Atlanta, March 2-4, and presided over a session as the chair of the History of Christianity.
