Former AUM student Octavia Spencer wins Academy Award
Former AUM student Octavia Spencer received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony on Feb. 26, becoming the second Alabama actress to receive the honor. The Montgomery native studied theatre at AUM, assisting backstage with two productions at Theatre AUM: “Coastal Disturbances” in 1989 and “Dog Island” in 1990, before finishing her liberal arts degree at Auburn University. Spencer has also received a SAG Award and Golden Globe this year for her role as Minny in “The Help.” Watch Spencer’s acceptance speech, in which she thanks the state of Alabama, at http://oscar.go.com/blogs/real-time/16.

Be ready for emergency situations on campus with Critical Operations Manual
Are you familiar with the policies and procedures that can help you be prepared and protected in the event of different emergencies? Find them in AUM's Critical Operations Manual, now available online. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to become familiar with the steps to take both in advance of and at the onset of a critical situation. Upcoming hands-on training for website content managers
Learn more about the many capabilities of Sitefinity, AUM's online content management system, that can help you and end users make the most of AUM's website. This workshop will be a more hands-on, interactive session than the introductory sessions to the website. Workshops will be held monthly to train any new users or address new questions.
The number of participants is limited to eight per session, so please email Charise Alexander at calexa19@aum.edu to RSVP. All sessions will take place in Clement Hall 114.

AUM's first Data Day to highlight campus progress, honor excellent campus department
The Office of Institutional Effectiveness invites all students, faculty and staff to the Taylor Center common area outside the Bookstore on Tuesday, March 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to see evidence of exciting progress at AUM over the previous year. The first "Data Day" at AUM will feature poster presentations about topics such as student satisfaction and course evaluations, the composition of the student body, and progress toward achieving learning outcomes. Another highlight of the day will be the presentation of the first Data Day Spotlight Award for demonstration of excellence through data to the Learning Center/Instructional Support Lab at 11 a.m.

Since that time, information has been gathered through visioning sessions, focus groups, and discussions with many people important to AUM, including students, faculty, staff, donors, advisory board members, alumni, and community partners. AUM Bookstore and The Roost closed for spring break
The AUM Bookstore and The Roost will be closed for spring break. However, the Starbucks coffee shop will be open during spring break from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. In addition to coffee and pastries, some sandwiches, fruit cups and salads to go will be available at Starbucks.

SGA accepting applications to serve in 2012-13
The Student Government Association is now accepting applications from students who wish to serve as officers or senators in the SGA for the 2012-13 academic year. Applications must be completed online by March 7. Campaigning will begin after spring break on Monday, March 19, with a kickoff breakfast at 8 a.m. Voting will take place on March 26 and 27.

Liberal Arts invites students to faculty/student luncheon on March 19

Not sure about your major and career path? Don't miss the School of Liberal Arts faculty and student luncheon. This informational session will enlighten you about programs of study in Liberal Arts and potential career fields you've probably never considered. The luncheon will take place from 12:05 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Monday, March 19, in Taylor Center 221. There will be free food, and all students are welcome. Undeclared majors and Bachelor of Liberal Arts students are highly encouraged to attend.

A representative from Balfour will be on campus for the AUM Grad Fair on Monday, March 5, and Tuesday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the AUM Bookstore. Come to the fair to place your orders for graduation announcements, class rings, and caps and gowns. The deadline for ordering caps and gowns is Friday, March 30. Candace Dyer, a junior organizational leadership major and guard on the Warhawks women's basketball team from Chattanooga, Tenn., was named the eighth recipient of the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award for the 2011-12 school year for her efforts both on and off the court. more
Sociology major Madison Hinton presented “Exploring Adolescent Sexual Behavior and its Contributors” at the Alabama-Mississippi Sociological Association meeting in Starkville, Miss. In addition to her presentation, Hinton placed first in the undergraduate paper competition, which earned her a $200 award.
Dr. David Lange, professor in Accounting and Finance, received the 2012 Fellow Award at the Academy of Economics and Finance February annual meeting. The AEF Fellow Award recognizes extraordinary contributions and achievements in the AEF’s mission of advancing teaching, research and service.
Lange
currently serves as the Eastern Finance Association executive director (since 2007), and he previously served as president, program chair and director for two academic associations, the Academy of Financial Services (2005-2010) and the Academy of Economics and Finance (1997-2004). He has served on the editorial board for Financial Decisions, Journal of Applied Business Research, Journal of Research in Finance, and Southern Business & Economic Journal.
Memories of Two Mondays, designed by Mike Winkelman, professor in Communication and Dramatic Arts, has been selected as one of Chicago's best productions of 2011. The Chicago Theater Beat announced the nominees for the Annual Chicago Theater Critics' Awards. The Beat Awards provide an opportunity for Chicago's critics to give recognition to outstanding achievements in Chicago's theatre community and the artists involved. A panel of nine critics from six different publications submitted nominations in 19 categories. Judges considered more than 500 productions from July 1, 2010, through June 30, 2011. The nominees with the most mentions were placed on the final ballot, which will be voted on by the panel over the next few weeks. Winners will be announced in late March.
Dr. Hua Xu, assistant professor in Political Science and Public Administration, was recently elected to the four-member board of the American Society for Public Administration’s Section on Public Performance and Management. SPPM is one of the largest sections of ASPA and has published the leading journal in the area, Public Performance & Management Review, since 1975.
“I am humbled by this opportunity to work with prominent scholars in the field like John Bryson at the University of Minnesota to make the Section an even more inclusive and engaging venue for both practitioners and academicians of public administration,” Xu said, adding that he encourages AUM students and graduates of AUM's public administration programs to join ASPA to seek more extensive opportunities for academic learning and professional development. Xu also is a member of the ASPA Section on Budgeting and Financial Management and is one of the founding members of the Section on Chinese Public Administration.
