GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK: A five-minute shower is equal to 20-35 gallons of water, while a full bath is equal to 60 gallons of water. In addition, running tap water for two minutes is equal to 3-5 gallons of water. Installing water-efficient fixtures can cut water use by 30 percent.

Alumni Association hosting 'Year of the Warhawk' homecoming reception on Feb. 17
The Auburn Montgomery Alumni Association will host its annual Homecoming Reception on the 10th floor of the AUM Library Tower on Friday, Feb. 17, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
This year’s theme is “The Year of the Warhawk,” a Chinese New Year-like celebration of AUM’s new athletic nickname and costumed mascot. The event will include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, music and fireworks. AUM’s new costumed mascot, Curtiss, will also join in the fun. Come visit with old friends and make some new ones, too. Admission is free to members of the Auburn Montgomery Alumni Association and $20 per person for non-members. Tickets may be purchased here, or you may join the Alumni Association by purchasing an annual lifetime membership here.

Burns and Jones to showcase Negro Spiritual at next Promenade Concert on Friday
The AUM Promenade Concert Series will present Dr. Pamela Burns and Dr. Joel Jones on Friday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m. in Goodwyn Hall 109, in conjunction with the AUM Liberal Arts Conference. Both Burns and Jones serve on the faculty at Alabama State University. Burns has performed with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, Frederick Douglass Hall Community Singers, Montgomery Chorale and with operatic legend William Warfield in Gershwin‘s Porgy and Bess. She is a two-time regional winner of the Metropolitan Opera Vocal Competition and serves as a consultant to the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra’s Vann Institute of Voice. Admission is free and open to the public. The Promenade Concerts are sponsored by the AUM School of Liberal Arts and by a generous gift from Eunice Henig. more

Tuscaloosa mayor to speak at Prattville Business Breakfast on Feb. 15
The next AUM Prattville Business Breakfast will feature Walter Maddox, the 36th mayor of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Since his first inauguration in 2005, Maddox has led initiatives to increase economic development, improve customer service and provide quality pre-k education for academically at-risk children. The breakfast will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 7:15 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Marriott Legends at Capitol Hill in Prattville. Register online

The AUM men's and women's tennis teams earned top-5 rankings in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Top-25 Polls, as the men enter the year ranked No. 4, while the defending national champion women's team was selected the preseason No. 1 team. more

Sign up for Central American study abroad opportunity in May
Pack your bags and get ready to head to Belize and Honduras for two weeks to gain a fuller understanding of the social, political and economic dynamics of contemporary social development, and to learn how to work effectively with diverse and vulnerable populations. This course is open to all majors as a social science elective and will be taught by Drs. Denise Davis-Maye and Terance Winemiller. The trip to Central America will be taken May 8-22. Local security organization invites public safety students to meeting on Feb. 15
The Montgomery chapter of ASIS International is inviting criminal justice and public safety students to its next chapter meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 12:15 p.m. in Taylor Center 221. The chapter is reaching out to interested college students to provide them with opportunities to network with professionals and learn more about their fields. A panel of four security professionals will talk about their respective companies or agencies and give some insight on how training, certification or education got them to where they are today. They will also talk about real world issues they face in the performance of their duties.

Madeline Bogacz, a junior majoring in Communication and Dramatic Arts, was selected to represent Alabama as a member of the Production Management Dream Team at the Southeastern Theatre Conference. She will be attending the convention in Chattanooga, Tenn., March 7 –11.
Dr. Don Soo Chon, assistant professor in Justice and Public Safety, was recently awarded a $1,300 grant from the AUM Research Council to support his project “Government Ineffectiveness, Social Disorganization, and National Homicide Rate.”

Works by Department of Fine Arts faculty members Andrew Hairstans, associate professor, and Heidi Lingamfelter, assistant professor, are in “Art of the State,” a juried show featuring pieces by 26 full- and part-time studio-art faculty from two- and four-year Alabama colleges and universities. “Art of the State” opened at the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art in Tuscumbia, Ala., on Jan. 22 and continues through March 2. The body of work then travels to museums in Troy and Gadsden. Hairstans' piece is “Replicant 2,” a graphite and Xerox transfer. Lingamfelter's work “Cold Waters #9” is collagraph, oil and watercolors.
Pox, Empire, Shackles, and Hides: The Townsend Site, 1670-1715 (2010 University of Alabama Press) by Dr. Jon Bernard Marcoux, assistant professor in Sociology, has been nominated for the 2012 Society for Economic Anthropology Book Prize. In the book, Marcoux examines the material remains of daily life within an eastern Tennessee Cherokee community in order to identify the strategies that households enacted while adapting to the social, political and economic disruptions that followed European contact (e.g., disease, warfare and large scale population displacements).
Dr. Benedict Okeke, professor and principal investigator of the Bioprocessing and Biofuel Research Laboratory in the Department of Biology, has been appointed an associate editor for the Journal of Environmental Quality, a major bimonthly journal published by the American Society of Agronomy. The journal publishes contributions in various aspects of anthropogenic impacts on the environment, including terrestrial, atmospheric and aquatic systems, with emphasis in understanding of the underlying processes. Okeke has more than 50 peer-reviewed international journal publications and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology.
Areial Woods, a senior physical education major and guard on the Warhawks women's basketball team from Aliceville, Ala., was named the seventh recipient of the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award for the 2011-12 school year for her efforts both on and off the court. more
