Wood set to speak at MLK Reflections Breakfast on Jan. 21

Sieu Tang Wood

Sieu Tang Wood will serve as keynote speaker at Auburn Montgomery’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Reflections Breakfast on Jan. 21, 9 a.m., in Taylor Center 221-223. Admission is free, but guests must RSVP by Jan. 16 at 244-3904.

Wood was recently awarded the Maury D. Smith Award for Excellence in Professional Ethics at the third annual River Region Ethics in Business and Public Service Awards. She immigrated to the U.S. from Laos, Vietnam in 1972 and has lived in Montgomery since 1985. She is the owner of Tang’s Alterations, which has five shops in Montgomery and one in Prattville. Her company is committed to community service, supporting the Girl Scouts, Rotary Club, Montgomery Ballet, Chamber of Commerce, Kids First, MACOA, and the American Cancer Society.

In addition to Wood's speech, AUM students, faculty and staff will share their reflections on King’s teachings and how we can use these insights to make our communities more inclusive, just and safe.

On the days surrounding the breakfast, AUM groups will complete service projects in the community as part of the national “A Day On, Not a Day Off” movement working to redefine MLK Day as a day of service. Volunteer projects are being planned for the Montgomery Humane Society, Family Justice Center, Montgomery AIDS Outreach, Habitat for Humanity and other community organizations. To get involved, contact the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at 244-3904 or visit www.aum.edu/diversity.
