Applications available for 2012 AUM Diamond Girls

Applications are currently being accepted by the Auburn Montgomery Department of Athletics for its 2012 Diamond Girls support group.

Intended to provide an additional element of game management for home baseball games, the Diamond Girls are being coordinated by Erin Looney, an instructor in Communications. Potential Diamond Girls should love baseball and have pride in the AUM baseball program.

Criteria to apply for the group include being a full-time AUM student, maintaining a 2.0 or better GPA and possessing a will to support the baseball program through game promotion, working the games and participating in some community service projects.

“I worked with a similar program for years at the University of South Alabama and had a number of friends who participated at Spring Hill College when I was in Mobile,” Looney said. “The Diamond Girls program provides a great alternative to conventional campus involvement for college women. Not every girl is interested in the traditional activities of a sorority and would like an opportunity to be active in their university community, as well as meet other girls who share their interests. Diamond Girls and programs like it serve as special interest groups for women who love baseball and have pride in their school's program.”

Looney mentioned four goals she hopes the Diamond Girls can achieve.

“I hope that forming a similar program at AUM will do a few things: 1. increase interest amongst students in our top notch AUM baseball program; 2. provide a link between AUM baseball and the community through fundraisers and community service with both the girls and the members of the team; 3. create a more satisfying fan experience for AUM baseball fans and families of the players; 4. give the students of AUM another great opportunity to be an active part of their university.”

Applications for the Diamond Girls can be found at www.AUMathletics.com on the baseball portion of the site. An online application is available to submit directly to Looney or a .pdf version is also available to print. All completed applications must be submitted to Looney by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, via email at elooney@aum.edu or returned to Liberal Arts 223D.

For more information about the application process or the Diamond Girls program, contact Looney at 334-328-7167 or via email.

In addition to the application, a five-minute interview will also be held to determine membership. Interviews will be held on Friday, Jan. 20, beginning at 10 a.m., in Clement Hall 200.

An information meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. in Taylor Center 230 for all interested applicants.

“Get out your Baseball Almanac and brush up on your diamond trivia," said Looney. "You don't have to be an expert on the game, but we greatly encourage girls who know and understand how baseball works. This is an exciting opportunity, and the program can only be a success with a good group of girls. If that's you, I'd love to meet you. Besides, is there a better way to spend the spring than in the stands at AUM baseball games cheering on the Warhawks?”
