Stefan Arnarson, a sophomore Business Administration major from Reykjavik, Iceland, has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference men’s offensive player of the week. Arnarson earned the award with his performance in AUM’s 2-1 win over Shorter College on Oct. 18. It is the third time this season Arnarson has received the weekly award.

Sarah Bura, a Geographic Information Systems certificate student who recently earned her bachelor's degree in International Studies from AUM, has accepted a junior consultant - GIS mapping position for a group of organizations including the AUM Center for Government, the Alabama Department of Homeland Security and the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center. Bura will use the skills she acquired in the GIS program at AUM to work on the Virtual Alabama School Safety Initiative. The project includes: employment of GIS technology that will enable schools to create a virtual safe school plan which is accessible by law enforcement, fire and rescue, and other first responders; development of GIS environments to display layered information, including virtual school plans and existing aerial imagery; and making the data available through Virtual Alabama.

Bogi Einarsson, a freshman from Grindavik, Iceland, has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference men’s defensive player of the week. After a 13-day layoff for the Senators, Einarsson led a strong defensive effort against the high-scoring Shorter College Hawks to hold the visitors to one goal on Oct. 18.

The doubles tandem of Alberto Gonzalez and Michael Johnson won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's National Small College Championships Super Bowl and will now move on to the NCAA Indoor National Championships hosted by Yale University on Nov. 3. The duo will face doubles teams from the best NCAA Division I programs at the indoor championships. The duo had to first win the NAIA men’s doubles championship to play for the Super Bowl Championship. They were the two seed behind Matthijs Bolsius and Mathias Weber from Azusa Pacific. Those two teams made it into the finals where the Senators defeated the top seed 6-3, 6-3. Once the duo made it into the Super Bowl, they faced Andrew Thomason and Andrew Lee of Middlebury College, the winners from the NCAA Division III bracket. The two teams matched each other point-for-point, but AUM was able to win the three-set thriller 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. This will be Michael Johnson’s second trip to the Indoor Championships. He teamed with Monte Tucker in 2008 to win the ITA Super Bowl and play at the Indoor Championships.

Yuki Kariya, a senior Exercise Science major from Osaka, Japan, has been awarded the AUM Army Athletic Achievement Award. Kariya scored the game-winning goal in double overtime against Lee University on Sept. 29 and then assisted the match-winning goal over Southern Wesleyan on Oct. 5. Kariya is also a part of the Senators' effort to collect soccer gear for underprivileged children in the Montgomery area. “Yuki leads by example on and off the field. He always works hard in training and in the games,” Head Coach Wulf Koch said. “He gives tremendous effort in practice and always displays good sportsmanship. He is a great person and volunteers his time coaching local children as well.”

Dr. Wyatt Wells, professor in History, was elected to the board of directors of the Alabama Humanities Foundation on Oct. 16. His three-year term will begin on Jan. 1. As the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the AHF strives to create and foster opportunities, through grants and AHF-conducted programs, for scholars and the public to interact and explore human values and meanings through the humanities.
