AUM employees encouraged to attend FERPA training March 26

A training session will be presented by the registrar March 26 to educate faculty and staff on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), which governs how schools handle information about students. The session will begin at 3 p.m. in Taylor Center 214.

Among FERPA's requirements, employees must limit disclosure of personally identifiable information contained in education records. It is important to train new members of the AUM community in FERPA requirements as well as refresh those who do not regularly deal with security issues.

It is vital that all members of the AUM community understand FERPA requirements. Compliance with FERPA is essential to AUM receiving federal funds, and FERPA training is an an important part of the accreditation process. FERPA sets forth requirements regarding the privacy of student records and governs the release of education records maintained by an educational institution and access to these records. Any educational institution that receives funds under any program administered by the U.S. Secretary of Education is required to comply with FERPA.
