On May 23, 1975, Theatre AUM staged its first production, Royall Tyler's The Contrast, right, in 109 Goodwyn Hall. But before that fateful day, Theatre AUM was born in the dream of Dr. Guin Nance, then dean of liberal arts and now chancellor of AUM. By hiring Dr. Mark Pilkinton to head AUM's newest department, she gave the university a theatre component it had not previously enjoyed.

In 1977, after Dr. Pilkinton accepted a job at the University of Michigan, Dr. Robert A. Gaines took the helm and has been director of Theatre AUM ever since. In 1979, the company moved to its present home in Taylor (then University) Center and opened the new facility with a production of Fiddler on the Roof in early 1980. That season also brought Theatre AUM a second faculty member with the arrival of Donetta Hornsby, who took over the supervision of all the technical aspects of our teaching and production programs.

Theatre AUM began its annual competition in the Amercian College Theater Festival in 1982, performing its production of Equus at the University of Alabama. Since then, Theatre AUM has taken three productions to the ACTF Southeastern Regional Festival and has earned numerous awards and honors in the competition.

Theatre AUM has occasionally opened its facility to other performing companies in the area. Click on the icons below for information from those productions.
