Learning Center

The Learning Center is located in 325 Moore Hall (Nursing Building) and provides the AUM student community with free one-on-one tutoring in mathematics, English as a Second Language, and writing in any course. Students may call  334-244-3470 or stop by for an appointment. Walk‑ins are also welcome on a space-available basis.

The Learning Center is exactly what its title suggests--a center for learning. A student who brings a math problem to the center would not be satisfied with the consultant's working the problem and handing it back. No transferable learning has occurred. We have the same attitude about writing consultations. Simply editing a student's draft may produce a paper that is better than it was before the consultation, but the student will not have learned any transferable skills, no methods to make the next writing assignment successful. Our consultations center on teaching students to plan, structure, and research ideas and to recognize the students' recurring errors so that students can edit and proofread their own papers more effectively. We respect our students' ownership of their own writing.

In addition to tutoring, the Center’s staff also provides student clients with a variety of helpful learning tools:

  • Daily additions of new web sites that are helpful to students in mathematics and English.
  • Textbook publishers' ancillary software for mathematics.
  • A mini-library containing math videotapes, along with Verbal Advantage audiotapes, that can be checked out at any time. Verbal Advantage continues to help students develop a richer, more colorful, and dynamic vocabulary.
  • A wide variety of technology (Gateway computers, tape players, interactive software) to supplement one-on-one tutoring services. (Students may work on their own or with the help of a tutor while using computer-assisted English tutorials.)
  • A collection of print handouts to assist students in English grammar/mechanics and essay development/writing.

Remember: Students who seek help early in the semester will benefit the most from the Learning Center's services!

Looking for tutoring in other courses?
